Campbell, Lima and Uhse deliver solo long balls
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - By tying their season-high in hits and socking a trio of home runs, the SFA baseball team became the first Southland squad in almost one calendar year to rack up double-digit runs on Sam Houston State in order to even the season series between the two Piney Woods rivals at one game apiece.
Josh Campbell and Brandon Uhse each went 3-for-5 with a solo home run as the 'Jacks pounded out 15 hits to claim a 12-7 triumph over the Bearkats in the front end of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Jaycees Field.
SCORING SUMMARY
B1 | With a stiff wind blowing out to left field, the chances were there from the get-go for a day full of long balls. Brandon Uhse started the home run parade by blasting a 2-1 offering from Sam Houston State starter Seth Ballew way beyond the fence in left-center. The freshman's first collegiate round-tripper handed the 'Jacks and early 1-0 lead.
T2 | Sam Houston State responded to SFA's long ball with one of its own in the second. Clayton Harp got a good swing on the second pitch he saw from Jacob Stobart and hammered a solo shot to right that tied things at 1-1.
B2 | Josh Campbell set the tone for the 'Jacks' six-run second by launching a solo homer to left that put the hosts ahead for good. After Antonio Lima drew a six-pitch walk, Jarrod Huber followed with a single to load the bases for Nick Daley with one out. The senior drove in his first run of the game by sending chopper to second that he beat out for an infield single. Up 3-1, Uhse loaded the bases back up with a single before SFA's continued to grow when Huber scampered home from third on a wild pitch by Sam Houston State starter Seth Ballew. From there, Manny Vasquez knocked Ballew out of the game by roping a twisting double just inside the right field line that scored Daley to make matters 5-1. Sean Moore greeted Bearkats' reliever Cole Wesneski with a two-run single that just got over the head of Sam Houston State's first baseman. Moore moved on to second after the Bearkats' first error of the game following his hit that pushed SFA's lead to 7-1.
T3 | Faced with a six-run deficit, the Bearkats used the home run ball to chip away at the 'Jacks' lead. Colton Cowser and Jack Rogers blasted back-to-back solo long balls to trim SFA's lead to 7-3.
B4 | The 'Jacks' answered the Bearkats' two-run third by scoring the game's next three runs. SFA's eventual game-winning run came courtesy of Josh Campbell who delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle after Moore and Jake Georgiades reached on a hit and a walk respectively.
B5 | Another heavy dose of two-out hitting helped the 'Jacks push their lead to seven runs. Daley delivered a two-out double right field before Uhse conjured up a single up the middle that Bearkat shortstop Jackson Lofton managed to get a glove on. Lofton, however, tried go gun Uhse out at first but the throw got away and let Daley come around to score. Following a steal of second by Uhse, Vasquez upped SFA's lead to 10-3 by driving an RBI single to left.
T6 | Right after the 'Jacks took their largest lead of the game, the Bearkats made things interesting by putting a three-spot on the board. A fielder's choice and a walk put runners on first and second for Harp who punched an RBI single to right. After another single by Jordan Cannon loaded the bases, Gavin Johnson drove in another Sam Houston State run on a fielder's choice ball before SFA's second error of the game helped the Bearkats plate one more run on another grounder in the infield.
B6 | After showing off their extra-base power earlier in the game, the 'Jacks played small ball to tack on another run. Josh Campbell's third hit of the game - a one-out single up the middle - allowed the junior to swipe second and move into scoring position. A bunt single from Lima pushed Campbell to third and Huber drove Campbell home with a perfectly placed bunt up the first base line to up the 'Jacks' lead to 11-6.
T8 | Back-to-back one out singles coupled with another SFA error put a pair of Bearkats in scoring position for Riley McKnight. The senior cut the 'Jacks' lead to 11-7 with a sacrifice fly that scored Cannon.
B8 | The 'Jacks put an exclamation point on their victory when Lima launched his first home run in an SFA uniform to lead off the 'Jacks' eighth. A senior out of Grapevine, Texas, Lima lofted a 2-1 offering from Sam Houston State relief arm Landon Ausley over the fence in left to cap the 'Jacks' 12-run attack.
AT THE DISH
• Powering the 'Jacks' season-high 15-hit attack were Campbell and Uhse who each delivered a homer as part of their three-hit performances in the front end of Sunday's doubleheader. That pair combined for three RBI and five of the 'Jacks' 12 runs.
• Daley, Lima, Moore and Vasquez each enjoyed multi-hit outings by notching two hits apiece while Vasquez drew two of the 'Jacks' seven walks.
• For the 'Kats, Harp drove in a pair of runs and was one of three Sam Houston State players who came up with a pair of hits. Rogers joined Harp in two-hit territory while each of them scored a pair of runs. Cannon added another pair of hits and scored a run for the visitors as well.
ON THE HILL
• Stobart (5-1) upped his team-leading win total to five by firing six innings of six-hit, six-run baseball. Half of the hits given up by the junior left the park, but all of the homers were of the solo variety and Stobart offset them by leaving four Bearkats on the basepaths and striking out four.
• Jeremy Rodriguez took over the team lead in saves by turning in a fine relief performance. Firing the last three innings of the game, the junior notched his fifth save of the season by letting up just a single run on three hits while striking out one.
• Ballew (2-2) lasted just 1 1/3 innings and gave up seven of the 'Jacks' 12 runs on six hits and a pair of walks. Only two of the Bearkats' six pitchers in the game did not yield a run.
ON DECK
• The 'Jacks and Bearkats will wrap up their three-game series by completing the back end of Sunday's doubleheader at Jaycees Field at 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
