Daley and Monacy combine for five hits, reach base nine times
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior outfielder Nick Daley enjoyed a 3-for-3 day at the plate and drove in a run, but the SFA baseball team gave up three multi-run innings to visiting Southeastern Louisiana and dropped an 11-3 Southland Conference decision Saturday at Jaycees Field.
SFA gave up a total of 14 hits while notching only seven of their own in the team's fifth-straight setback. The loss drops the 'Jacks to 13-15 and 7-4 in Southland Conference action while the Lions continue to trend upward after collecting their eighth-straight victory.
SCORING SUMMARY
T2 | Two-out hitting allowed the Lions to get on the board first. After Jaxon Covington started the frame wit a couple of fly ball outs, Connor Manola and Eli Johnson delivered back-to-back singles to put two runners on. Nathan Pilutti did the rest by driving the first pitch he saw from Covington up the middle for a two-run single that made things 2-0.
B4 | Much like he did Friday night, Manny Vasquez reached base to start the 'Jacks' rally. The senior drew a five-pitch walk to start the frame and moved to third when Jordan Monacy drove a single deep to the right-center gap. Though he did not reach base, Jared Martin broke up the shutout by sending an 0-2 pitch from Mason Knopp to shallow center. That sacrifice fly scored Vasquez and cut the Lions' lead to 2-1.
T5 | The Lions got that one run back and much more in the top of the fifth. Pilutti, Steckler and Brennan Breaud delivered singles to start the frame and load the bases. From there, Preston Faulkner sent an RBI single deep in the hole to the left side of the 'Jacks' infield to push the Lions' lead to 3-1. Kyle Schimpf broke things open with one swing of the bat, launching a 2-1 offering from Covintgon beyond the fence in right-center for a grand slam.
B5 | Nick Daley's leadoff walk turned into the 'Jacks' second run of the game. After taking first on six pitches, the senior moved to second on a groundout and third in a sinking single to center by Brandon Uhse. Jake Georgiades reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop which allowed Daley to come home and cut the Lions' lead to 7-2.
B8 | Capitalizing on a bases-loaded situation in the home half of the eighth allowed SFA to pull within four runs. Vasquez and Monacy drew walks which were sandwiched around a single by Sean Moore to load the bases with nobody out. Daley's third hit of the day was a two-out single through the Lions' infield that brought Vasquez home and made the score 7-3.
T9 | Southeastern Louisiana's third multi-run inning of the game came in the ninth when the Lions connected for four hits off of SFA relief arm Austin Hearn. The senior issued a one-out walk to Steckler before Breaud got a single down past the glove of Martin in left. The single let Steckler go to third and he came home on a wild pitch by Hearn. Designated hitter Preston Faulkner then hit an RBI triple off the wall in center field before Trey Harrington's RBI double pushed the Lions' 10th run across. Tony Grabowske came on in the ninth and was greeted with an RBI triple down the right field line by Nick Ray to account for the final margin.
