SFA bowling eliminates No. 5 seed Tulane and third-seeded Arkansas State, Ladyjacks one of three teams remaining at Southland Bowling League Championship
DALLAS, Texas – The SFA bowling team is one of three teams remaining at the 2019 Southland Bowling League Championship in Dallas after the Ladyjacks eliminated both fifth-seeded and 12th-ranked Tulane and third-seeded and fourth-ranked Arkansas State Saturday to reach the elimination bracket finals. SFA will bowl for a spot in the league's championship title match for the second-straight year Sunday morning when it takes on top-seeded and second-ranked Vanderbilt at 8 a.m. on lanes 19-20 inside USA Bowl.
For the second-straight day the Ladyjacks defeated the Green Wave of Tulane, this time earning wins in both the traditional team match and the Baker total pinfall match as SFA claimed 2-0 victories in both of its matchups of the day. Taking the traditional team match 968-941 against Tulane, the Ladyjacks benefitted from a 205 by freshman Carlene Beyer, in addition to 190+ games by sophomores Dakota Faichnie (193) and Sarah Gill (196) and senior Dakotah Hazlewood (190).
Tallying 1,012 pins in the Baker total pinfall match, SFA out-bowled the Green Wave in three of the five games as Tulane managed 951 pins. The Ladyjacks recorded a 221 in game one and posted a match-high 256 score in game four before finishing off the match with a 203 game five.
A year after taking runner-up honors to Arkansas State in the 2018 Southland Bowling League Championship title match, SFA avenged its loss Saturday by registering over 1,000 pins in the traditional team match and edging the Red Wolves by 24 pins in the Baker total pinfall match. Beyer rolled a career-high 269 in the traditional team match, turning in the second-highest individual game score by a Ladyjack this season, while Hazlewood bowled a 220 and Gill a 209 for the Ladyjacks to tally 1,063 pins With Arkansas State posting only 897 pins, SFA took a 1-0 lead. In the Baker total pinfall match, the Ladyjacks out-bowled the Red Wolves in the first four games and notched a 211 in game three to close out the match with a 910-886 win.
SFA will attempt to avenge Friday's 2-0 loss to the top-seeded Commodores Sunday morning as it vies for a spot in the league championship's title match, where second-seeded and fifth-ranked Sam Houston State awaits. The Bearkats have gone a perfect 3-0 at the 2019 Southland Bowling League Championship with three-straight main draw wins. Should the Ladyjacks eliminate Vanderbilt Sunday morning, they will have to defeat the Bearkats twice to win the league crown. SFA was defeated 1,066-948 in the traditional team match and 1,049-861 in the Baker total pinfall match against Vanderbilt Friday afternoon in the main draw's second round.
Sunday's elimination bracket final and championship title match of the 2019 Southland Bowling League Championship will be streamed live via InsideBowling.
Single session tickets Sunday are $10 at the door. All children aged five and under are free in addition to any Southland Bowling League institution students with valid school ID.
For the second consecutive year, the Southland Bowling League champion will be granted automatic qualification into the NCAA Bowling Championship. The NCAA Women's Bowling Committee will select a field of 12 teams – eight automatic qualifying teams and four at-large teams. Teams will be ranked, based on available selection criteria, with the top four being placed in the championship bracket. The remaining eight teams will play in opening round matches to determine the final four teams that will compete in the championship.
