SFA bowling splits matches on opening day of league championship, top fifth-seeding Tulane in first round
DALLAS, Texas – On the opening day of play at the nation's most challenging NCAA bowling league tournament, the SFA bowling team advanced to the second round of the main draw with a 2-1 victory over 12th-ranked and fifth-seeded Tulane at USA Bowl in Dallas. Splitting matches on the day, the fourth-seeded Ladyjacks were unable to upend second-ranked and top-seeded Vanderbilt in the second round but remain in the hunt for the 2019 Southland Bowling League Championship.
With each matchup of the league tournament featuring a best-of-three format with one traditional team match, one Baker total pinfall match and, if necessary, a third best 4-of-7 Baker match, SFA came back from a 1-0 deficit against Tulane. The Green Wave took the traditional team match by a score of 954-858, despite senior Paige Beeney rolling a 193. In the Baker total pinfall match, the Ladyjacks out-bowled Tulane by 127 pins (928-801) after registering a 203 in games two and four, setting up the decisive best 4-of-7 Baker match.
Taking game one of the decisive third match (159-148), SFA and Tulane would be tied at 1-1 before the Ladyjacks claimed a 2-1 lead with a 208-193 game three victory. Tulane took game four (219-169) to tie things up once again at 2-2 but 188-168 game five and 180-177 game six wins clinched the match and first round for SFA.
The Ladyjacks ran into a red-hot Vanderbilt squad in the second round as the defending national champion Commodores claimed over 1,000 pins in back-to-back matches. Despite three SFA bowlers tallying individual games over 200 in the traditional team match, Vanderbilt recorded 1,066 total pins compared to the Ladyjacks' 948. Senior Dakotah Hazlewood led the way with a 205, while freshman Carlene Beyer scored a 203 and sophomore Dakota Faichnie rolled a 200.
In the Baker total pinfall match, the Commodores notched 1,049 pins as SFA finished with 861. The Ladyjacks started the match strong, bowling a 218 in the opening game but couldn't overcome Vanderbilt's five-straight 200-pin games.
SFA will have a rematch with fifth-seeded Tulane Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the second round of the elimination bracket. The match will take place on lanes 27-28 at USA Bowl with the winner advancing to play the either third-seeded and fourth-ranked Arkansas State or seventh-seeded and 23rd-ranked Louisiana Tech in the de facto elimination bracket semifinal Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. on lanes 23-24.
Featured matches of the 2019 Southland Bowling League Championship will be streamed live via InsideBowling, while SFA Bowling's Facebook page will stream the Ladyjacks' remaining matches at the tournament.
Single session tickets for Saturday or Sunday only, are $10 at the door. Three-day passes for all days of the 2019 Southland Bowling League Championship are available for $15, while all children aged five and under are free in addition to any Southland Bowling League institution students with valid school ID.
For the second consecutive year, the Southland Bowling League champion will be granted automatic qualification into the NCAA Bowling Championship. The NCAA Women's Bowling Committee will select a field of 12 teams – eight automatic qualifying teams and four at-large teams. Teams will be ranked, based on available selection criteria, with the top four being placed in the championship bracket. The remaining eight teams will play in opening round matches to determine the final four teams that will compete in the championship.
