Clowers goes 2-for-3 with an RBI single, Vasquez drives in game-winning run
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - In order to lock down its fourth-straight win, the SFA baseball team relied on a big contribution from a freshman as well as a timely piece of hitting from one of its senior infielders.
First-year man Carson Clowers capped off the 'Jacks' four-run sixth with an RBI single and Senior Manny Vasquez came up with the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh to make a winner out of senior left-hander Cody Adams. From there, Tyler Starks tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save of the season in SFA's 8-5 comeback victory over Prairie View A&M Tuesday evening at Tankersley Field.
SCORING PLAYS
B1 | Two of the Panthers' first four runs of the game came in the opening frame. Dalton Horner handed the hosts an early 1-0 lead by coming up with an infield RBI single to third base. The first of SFA's two errors in the game came on a grounder by Brian Williams that let Alex Martinez come home from second and make matters 2-0.
B4 | The Panthers extended their lead to 4-0 with an RBI groundout by Demarie Smith coupled with a two-out RBI single off the stick of Daniel Lingua.
T5 | Kyle Cullen got the 'Jacks on the board by sending a deep fly ball to right. His sacrifice fly let Will Cerny score from third which narrowed the Panther's lead to 4-1.
T6 | SFA moved in front for the first time by scoring half of its runs in the sixth. Jared Martin, Vasquez and Skylar Black drew walks to load the bases and an eight-pitch walk to Cerny pushed SFA's second run across the plate. With the Panther's lead down to 4-2, designated hitter Josh Campbell conjured up a sacrifice fly that scored Vasquez to put SFA within one. Black came home on a wild pitch with two outs to knot matters at 4-4 before Carson Clowers came up with his second hit of the season. The freshman's RBI single to the gap in left-center drove in Cerny and put SFA up 5-4.
B6 | Smith tied the game with a two-out RBI single to center before senior lefty Cody Adams came on to end the Panthers' sixth with a strikeout.
T7 | A leadoff double by freshman Brandon Uhse set the table for the 'Jacks to take the lead. After Uhse swiped third base with one out, Vasquez drove him in with an RBI single. Three wild pitches later, Vasquez himself came home and pushed SFA's lead to 7-5.
T9 | Cerny notched an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Vasquez reached on a one-out error and moved to third on the miscue, setting the table for the sophomore to drive him in with a fly to deep center which accounted for the final score.
