Men’s Golf Back in Action, Returns to the Pelican State for Lake Charles Toyota Invite

‘Jacks take on 18-team tournament field at the Country Club at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles, Louisiana
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the second time in 2019 and third time this season, the SFA men's golf team will be competing in the Pelican State, this week at the Country Club at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Lumberjacks, who are back in action for the second-straight week, face a competitive 18-team tournament field as part of fellow Southland Conference member McNeese's Lake Charles Toyota Invite, held Monday and Tuesday, March 18-19.
The Format
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will get underway Monday morning with a double tee start off of holes one and 10 as two rounds of golf will take place on the first day of play. On Tuesday, the final 18 holes of play will conclude the Lake Charles Toyota Invite, once again with a double tee start off of holes one and 10. Both days will feature tee times beginning at 7:50 a.m. with a final tee time of 10 a.m.
The Course
The Country Club at the Golden Nugget features a par-72, 7,007-yard 18-hole championship golf course that was named the No. 2 course in Louisiana according to Golfweek's Best of 2018. Designed by California-based architect Todd Eckenrode and Origins Golf Designs, the course showcases open fairways and immaculately-kept Bermuda greens, which are surrounded by native marsh landscaping.
The Tournament Field
Eighteen teams will converge in Lake Charles for the tournament with a total of six Southland teams competing. In addition to host McNeese, Lamar, New Orleans, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and SFA will be representing the conference at the event as Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Missouri State, Rice, TCU, Texas State, Texas Tech, UTSA and Team Sweden complete the tournament field.
The Lineup
Seniors Angelo Leyvani and Jake Hendrix lead the Lumberjacks' lineup at the Lake Charles Toyota Invite with sophomore Steven Fabik, along with freshmen Alec Brown and Isiah Henderson, rounding out SFA's scoring golfers. Fellow freshman Johannes Gudmundsson will be competing as an individual across the two days for his third tournament as a Lumberjack.
Tee Times
SFA has been paired with Team Sweden and Lamar for Monday's opening round and will tee off from hole 10 beginning at 8:06 a.m. A Lumberjack will tee off every eight minutes starting with Henderson at 8:06 a.m., followed by Brown at 8:14 a.m., Fabik at 8:22 a.m., Hendrix at 8:30 a.m. and Leyvani at 8:38 a.m. Gudmundsson is paired with other individual competitors from TCU and Lamar for Monday's play and will be the first SFA golfer to tee off at 7:58 a.m.
Last Time on the Links
Last week, the 'Jacks posted their second consecutive three-round score of 22-over 886 at the University of Houston's Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas. SFA shot its third-lowest round of the season in the first round of the tournament with a 4-under 284 and finished ahead of the Southland's Houston Baptist, in addition to Bowling Green and Southern Mississippi. Leyvani led the 'Jacks as he tied for 26th among 94 total golfers with an even-par 216.
Last Year in Lake Charles
Finishing third among an 11-team tournament field, SFA carded a 6-over 870 for the three rounds and placed ahead of five league teams, including Lamar, McNeese, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans. Three 'Jacks earned top-25 finishes among 61 total golfers with Hendrix tying for 14th (even-par 216) and Leyvani tying for 24th (4-over 220). Fabik tied for 49th with a 14-over 230.

The 'Jacks will have a two-week break before returning to tournament action Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2 at Sam Houston State's Bearkat Invitational, held at the Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Course in Montgomery, Texas.
