Ladyjacks bowl third-highest match score of season, pick up pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents
SMYRNA, Tenn. – Among a 29-team tournament field, which features seven of the nation's top 10 programs and 17 of the top 25, the SFA bowling team remains in the top five following Saturday's second day of competition at the 15th annual Columbia 300 Music City Classic in Nashville. The Ladyjacks added 5,081 pins to their total in five traditional team matches, owning a cumulative pinfall tally of 10,140 and sitting in fifth place heading into Sunday's bracket play at the Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Bowling SFA's third-highest match score of 2018-19, the Ladyjacks picked up a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents as senior Dakotah Hazlewood finished third among 172 total bowlers.
After being outdone by the 11th-best team in the nation, North Carolina A&T, 1,068-932 despite getting 200-pin games from seniors Hazlewood (213) and Paige Beeney (200), SFA rebounded with three consecutive match victories. The Ladyjacks topped 21st-ranked Maryville University 1,116-975, the Ladyjacks' 1,116 representing SFA's third-highest pinfall total of any match this season, as every bowler rolled an individual game over 200. Hazlewood led the way with a 252, while sophomore Sarah Gill claimed a 244 followed by Beeney's 212, freshman Carlene Beyer's 205 and junior Megan Eaglehouse's 203.
Against Lincoln University, the Ladyjacks were 253-pin victors with a 1,050 to 797 match win. Getting a match-best 237 game from Hazlewood, SFA saw Eaglehouse turn in a 227 and Gill record a 204. Earning their second win of the day over a top-25 opponent, the Ladyjacks out-bowled No. 23 Louisiana Tech by 15 pins (1,015-1,000). Hazlewood continued her impressive day on the lanes with a game of 249 as Beeney posted a 205.
Going up against the second-ranked team in the country, SFA was unable to overcome a Commodore squad that racked 1,148 pins in the traditional team match, despite its best efforts. The Ladyjacks benefitted from a 245-pin game by Gill and a 191-pin game from Hazlewood but their 968 score was not nearly enough.
Hazlewood averaged a score of 228.4 in the five traditional team matches, knocking down 1,142 total pins on the day. Gill also placed within the top 15, finishing 14th with a 214.2 game average and a total of 1,071, while Beeney was 51st among all bowlers with a pinfall tally of 976 and a traditional game average of 195.2. Beyer finished 72nd overall with a 187.4 average and five-game score of 937.
Tournament host Vanderbilt leads the three-day event with a perfect 9-0 record and 10,673 total pins. Top-ranked McKendree sits in second place with a pinfall total of 10,360, followed by No. 11 North Carolina A&T (10,249) and fourth-ranked Arkansas State (10,178).
Reigning Southland Bowling League Bowler of the Month Maria Bulanova of Vanderbilt averaged a 236.2 in Saturday's traditional team matches to top all bowlers as North Carolina A&T's Ericka Quesada totaled 1,170 pins for second place with a 234.0 average.
The Columbia 300 Music City Classic will conclude Sunday with a tournament champion being crowned following three rounds of best 4-of-7 Baker bracket play matches, which are set to begin at 8:10 a.m.
Earning the No. 5 seed for Sunday's bracket play, SFA will vie for third place and take on 10th-ranked and sixth-seeded Wisconsin-Whitewater in the opening round. With a first round win, the Ladyjacks will bowl the loser of No. 11 and third-seeded North Carolina A&T versus fourth-ranked and No. 4 seed Arkansas State.
