Men’s Golf Closes Out Border Olympics Tuesday

‘Jacks shoot 22-over 886 for second consecutive tournament, finish ahead of Southland’s Houston Baptist
LAREDO, Texas – For the second-straight tournament, the SFA men's golf team carded a three-round score of 22-over 886 after the Lumberjacks closed out the University of Houston's Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, Tuesday. SFA finished ahead of Southland Conference counterpart Houston Baptist, in addition to Bowling Green and Southern Mississippi, at the Laredo Country Club as senior Angelo Leyvani tied for 26th.
Sitting just three strokes over par heading into the second day of play, the 'Jacks recorded an impressive 4-under 284 in the opening round Monday for their third-lowest single round score of the season. On Tuesday, Leyvani notched a 3-over 75 to finish the two-day tournament with an even-par 216 among 94 total golfers.
Fellow senior Jake Hendrix turned in a 4-over 76 on the par-72, 7,375-yard course to tie for 42nd with a three-round total of 4-over 220. Sophomore Steven Fabik tied for 50th with a 54-hole score of 6-over 222, while freshman Alec Brown (15-over 231) and sophomore Justin Benson (16-over 232) finished within one stroke of each other. Redshirt sophomore Austin McKinney, competing as an individual and taking on just his second tournament as a Lumberjack, registered a 34-over 250 for the three rounds.
Arkansas State, who is ranked 20th nationally according to Golfstat, claimed the Border Olympics title with a two-day tally of 29-under 835, while fellow league member Sam Houston State took home runner-up honors with a 14-under 29. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (11-under 853) finished just three strokes back from Sam Houston State for third place.
Zan Luka Stirn of Arkansas State was the individual medalist after carding an impressive 12-under 204 for the 54 holes as Oral Robert's Cody Burrows claimed runner-up accolades three strokes off the lead at 9-under 207. UTRGV's Alvaro Hernandez and Sam Houston State's William Holcomb tied for third with cumulative scores of 8-under 208.
