Junior finishes with three of SFA's four RBI
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Jake Georgiades hit a game-tying solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning which helped the SFA baseball team force extra innings in the program's first game against Army, but the Black Knights scratched the game-winning run across with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 12th inning to come up with a 5-4 victory at Jaycees Field Tuesday night.
Junior infielder Sean Moore drove in the first three SFA runs, but 11 walks and one hit by pitch came back to haunt the 'Jacks in a loss that snapped their three-game winning streak. SFA is now 2-1 in extra-inning games this season after a game that saw each squad strand 12 runners on base.
SCORING SUMMARY
B1 | For the fourth-straight game, Nick Daley reached base to lead things off for the 'Jacks and that led to them grabbing the lead. After getting hit with a pitch, Daley moved to second on a groundout by Brandon Uhse before dashing over to third on a passed ball. Sean Moore drove Daley home with a a sacrifice fly that made matters 1-0.
T2 | Starting pitcher Cully Mangus enjoyed a one, two, three first, but things unraveled for the freshman in the second. Back-to-back walks followed by an Army single loaded the bases before Mangus walked Blake Ledoux to push the game-tying run across. Joseph Sgambelluri took over from there but the Black Knights were able to grab the lead before the inning came to a close. Sgambelluri got Anfernee Crompton to ground into a double play which pushed Army's second run across and the Black Knights took a 3-1 lead on a wild pitch that allowed Jeremiah Adams to score.
B5 | As was the case in the first inning, it was Daley who started SFA's attack. The senior drew a four-pitch walk to start the frame which was followed up by a single off the bat of Kyle Cullen. Moore kept the line moving by tying things at three with his one-out, two-run double down the right field line. That double tied the game for the second time.
T6 | Drake Titus' one-out double eventually turned into Army's go-ahead run. After stealing third with two outs, Titus watched teammates John McKenna draw one of his three walks before Trey Martin sent a ball through SFA's infield to score Titus and put the visitors up 4-3.
B7 | Army's lead did not last long as Jake Georgiades hammered a 1-2 offering from Anthony LoRicco out beyond the left-field fence. The senior's no-doubt long ball was his first of 2019 and knotted things up at four.
T12 | After two full extra frames, the Black Knights were able to push the game-winning run across. Anthony Giachin started Army's tiebreaking frame with a single up the middle before Tony Grabowske issued a four-pitch walk to Cam Cerruto. After a sacrifice bunt put those runners in scoring position, Grabowske issued an intentional walk to Adams to load the bases. Hoping for a ground ball to get out of the frame, SFA instead watched Grabowske walk catcher Brett Ledoux on five pitches which resulted in the game's final run.
ON THE MOUND
• In all, the 'Jacks used nine arms in the 12-inning affair with Grabowske (1-1) getting tagged with his first setback of the season. The senior walked three, gave up one hit and struck out one in his only inning of work.
• Tyler Starks worked his way through two frames and finished with a game-high four strikeouts in a solid relief effort.
• Austin Hearn's 3 1/3 innings of relief was the longest outing of any SFA arm Tuesday night. In that span, the senior let up just one hit and walked only one.
• For Army, Cam Opp (2-0) kept his perfect record intact by tossing the final 1 1/3 innings for the win.
• Army's group of four pitchers issued only five walks on the night compared to 11 free passes by SFA's nine arms.
AT THE DISH
• Moore's three RBI were a game high despite the junior recording just one hit. Josh Campbell, Kyle Cullen and Manny Vasquez registered two hits apiece to pace SFA's 10-hit attack.
• Adams, Giachin and Trey Martin led Army with two hits each. Ledoux drove in two of the Black Knights' five runs while Martin finished with a single RBI.
• SFA had two runners thrown out at the plate - one to end the first inning and another on a squeeze play with one out in the fifth - and pinch-hitter Jared Martin lined into an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the 11th inning.
COMING UP NEXT
• The 'Jacks and Black Knights conclude their two-game set Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. from Jaycees Field. Senior right-hander Trayson Kubo will get the ball for SFA while Army has not yet named its starting pitcher.
