Senior works six innings in SFA's second game against Black Knights
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior Trayson Kubo recovered from a shaky start and wound up striking out a career-high 11 batters to help the SFA baseball team's offense come back from a 4-0 deficit and tie things up but Army put a four-spot on the board in the top of the seventh and held on to complete a two-game sweep of SFA with an 8-5 win at Jaycees Field Wednesday night.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | Four of the Black Knights' ASDF hits in the game came in the first frame and helped the visitors take an early lead. Before he settled into his dominant groove, Kubo let up consecutive one-out single to Drake Titus and Anthony Giachin. That set the table for Andre Walden who made it 2-0 with a two-run single up the middle. After Walden swiped second, Army made it 3-0 when Josh White registered a two-out RBI single to cap the team's four-hit frame.
T3 | Giachin led off the Black Knights' third with a double and from there Jeremiah Adams drove in his first run of the game with an RBI single that pushed Army's lead to 4-0.
B3 | SFA began its comeback bid when Kyle Cullen drew a six-pitch walk to start the third. A groundout allowed the outfielder to advance to second before Jake Georgiades broke up the Black Knights' shutout bid with an RBI single.
B4 | The 'Jacks cut the Black Knights' lead down to two when Jordan Monacy reached on the first of two Army errors to start the bottom of the fourth. The junior moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a groundout by Manny Vasquez. Jarrod Huber then stepped to the plate and pushed Monacy home with an RNI groundout that made matters 4-2.
B5 | Another leadoff walk drawn by the home team helped it pull within one run. Carson Chapman took five on five pitches and after being pulled for pinch runner Josh Campbell a balk moved the baserunner into scoring position. Campbell ran over to third on a groundout and Jared Martin did the rest with an infield RBI single that drove the junior home.
B6 | Vasquez's one-out single in the sixth helped the 'Jacks knot things at four before the sixth inning came to a close. Army's second error of the night allowed Vasquez to slide in safely to second on a fielder's choice ball from Huber and Cullen drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Down to their final out, SFA made good use of a passed ball that allowed Vasquez to race home from third and tie things up.
T7 | Unfortunately for the 'Jacks, the tie did not last long as Army took advantage of SFA relief arm Seth Campbell in the seventh. Jacob Hurtubise got things started with a leadoff single and moved to third after two wild pitched from Campbell. A walk - Army's first of three in the inning - put runners on the corners and Giachin put the Black Knights in front for good with an RBI single off of Austin Roth to make matters 5-4. A squeeze play started with Adams' bat pushed Army's lead to 6-4 before two more walks from Roth loaded the bases. Tim Simons capped the Black Knights' four-run frame with a two-run single to put the visitors up 8-4.
B9 | Attempting to mount a rally, SFA got consecutive one-out singles from Cole Lightfoot and Casen White to put runners on first and second. Monacy made it a three-run game with an RBI single to score Lightfoot, but Vasquez - who was representing the game-tying run - struck out looking to end the game.
