NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the third time this spring, the SFA women's golf team will take to the links for competition, doing so this week in McAllen, Texas, for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Invitational. The Ladyjacks will play a total of 54 holes across Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12 at the two-day, three-round tournament held at the McAllen Country Club.
The Format
The opening round of the UTRGV Invitational will get started Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start, before the second 18 holes of play take place Monday afternoon. The final round of the tournament will conclude play Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m., once again with a shotgun start.
The Course
The McAllen Country Club, the premier country club of the Rio Grande Valley, features an 18-hole par-72, 6,042-yard championship golf course that has earned its reputation as the finest golf course in south Texas. A traditional design with smaller greens and tree-lined fairways, the McAllen Country Club course is nestled in a luxurious setting and provides an outstanding challenge for skilled players.
The Tournament Field
Fifteen teams from across the nation will converge in McAllen over the next two days with fellow Southland Conference members Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, McNeese and the University of the Incarnate Word joining SFA. Texas State, host UTRGV, Omaha, Weber State, Creighton, Prairie View A&M, Chicago State, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Western Texas Community College and McLennan Community College complete the tournament's field.
The Lineup
Five Ladyjacks will be in action across Monday and Tuesday with upperclassmen Alexandra Batista, Erica Lautensack and Jamee Jorgensen leading the way. SFA's lineup will also feature sophomore Kelly Yang and junior Paola Cortes.
Tee Times
With an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for Monday's opening round, the Ladyjacks will be teeing off of holes four through eight and are paired with the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and the Cowgirls of McNeese for the day's play. Batista will tee off of hole four while Lautensack will get started on hole five, followed by Jorgensen from hole six, Yang hole seven and Cortes hole eight.
Last Time on the Links
SFA turned in its best finish of 2018-19 two weeks ago at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Islander Classic (Feb. 25-26), placing fourth among an 11-team field. The Ladyjacks shot a 66-over 930 at the Corpus Christi Country Club as a trio of SFA golfers took home top-15 finishes. Lautensack (11-over 227) tied for fifth among 60 total golfers on the par-72, 6,045-yard golf course as Batista (12-over 228) placed eighth and Jorgensen (18-over 234) tied for 15th, all three earning their highest finishes of the season thus far.
Last Time at the UTRGV Invitational
Making their third appearance at the UTRGV Invitational and first since 2017, the Ladyjacks placed eighth among 13 teams in SFA's most recent trip to McAllen.
