BEAUMONT, Texas – In a program as storied and successful as SFA women's basketball, rivalries have ebbed and flowed over time. It is during one of these cyclical periods that the Ladyjacks and the Cardinals of Lamar have established a fierce rivalry in recent memory, paving the way for a pivotal contest in Beaumont on Saturday. Eerily similar to the position these two teams battled over last season, the top spot in the league standings and a strong shot at the Southland Conference regular season title is up for grabs between a pair of teams who have just one conference loss apiece.
Tip-off from the Montagne Center on the campus of Lamar University is set for 2:00 p.m. the matchup will be shown on ESPN+, with Dan Gresham (play-by-play) and Emily Sterling (color) calling the game's action on the stream. Fans can tune in for a masterful analysis of the game's action from third-year man Bobby Mauro on FM Q107.7, available in and around the Nacogdoches area and the TuneIn app nationwide. Live stats are available via the link above as well.
With a handful of games left to go in the regular season, the Southland Conference regular season title has essentially become a two-horse race, as SFA boasts a conference-best 23-4 mark overall and a 14-1 record in league play, compared to a 22-5 record overall and 15-1 league mark for the redbirds. Abilene Christian and Nicholls both sit tied for third with 11-4 conference records, which means that the winner of Saturday's bout has a clear lead heading into the final stretch of games.
The Ladyjacks took the opening salvo of the season series, claiming a 70-58 victory over Lamar in Nacogdoches back on February 9. That gives SFA four victories in the past six meetings with LU and a 56-15 edge in the all-time series, but the task at hand this Saturday will be daunting in its own right. Lamar sits on a 40-game winning streak at the Montagne Center, giving SFA a great chance at being the first team to knock the Cards off at home since 2015-16.
After fighting through its two poorest shooting games of the conference slate, the Ladyjacks got back on track with their league-best field goal accuracy in the win over UCA, a team known for its defense. SFA also connected on ten three-pointers for the second straight game, and own the top marks in the Southland in both conference field-goal percentage (50.1) and three-point percentage (39.8). Saturday's clash will bring both of the conference's top defenses to bear against each other, as SFA holds the top spot (53.5) and Lamar is second with 58.2 points allowed per game in league play.
