Ladyjacks go 5-0 in traditional team matches Saturday to stay perfect, first 10-0 start at a tournament in program history
ORLANDO, Fla. – Ten matches have been played at the Sunshine State Winter Classic in Florida and 10 matches have been won by the SFA bowling team. The Ladyjacks, who sit third place with a pinfall total of 9,849, earned five traditional team match victories Saturday to improve to 10-0 at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando. It marks the first time in program history SFA has begun a tournament with 10-straight match wins.
Despite defeating four nationally-ranked opponents and collecting 4,905 pins Saturday, the Ladyjacks sit 244 pins behind first-place and third-ranked Nebraska (10,093) and just 74 pins behind second-place No. 2 Vanderbilt (9,923).
SFA got the day started by edging 14th-ranked Tulane in a one-pin affair, 942-941, as senior bowler Dakotah Hazlewood led the Ladyjacks with a team-best game of 210. Turning in its best performance of the day, SFA was resilient once again in an eight-pin contest with No. 9 Tulane (1,090-1,082). Three different Ladyjacks rolled impressive games over 240 led by senior Paige Beeney's 256 as SFA was able to withstand Tulane's Tiera Gulum, who recorded a perfect game at 300 in the match. Hazlewood notched her second consecutive 200-pin game with a 249, while sophomore Sarah Gill contributed a 241.
Against co-host and 20th-ranked Sacred Heart, the Ladyjacks claimed a score of 996 and earned the victory by a wider margin of 996-937. SFA got a 223 game from freshman Carlene Beyer as Beeney poured in another strong game of 225 and Hazlewood chipped in a 197. Dominating its next two matches, the Ladyjacks picked up a 995-851 victory over No. 22 Monmouth with Beyer posting her second-straight 200-pin game (213) and Beeney her third-straight (212). Hazlewood scored a 205 game in the match before SFA dismantled Bethune-Cookman 882-485. Gill bowled a team-best 199, while three other Ladyjacks registered game scores of 175 or better.
Following the five traditional team matches, Beeney ranked third among 93 total bowlers with a 212 game average and a pinfall total of 1,060. Hazlewood finished 11th in the individual standings after averaging a score of 201.6 and knocking down 1,008 total pins in the five traditional games bowled Saturday, while Beyer was not too far behind with a 197.2 game average and 986 pins for 16th place. Gill's 196.4 pinfall per game average and 982 total pins earned her an 18th-place finish among all individual competitors.
The three-day tournament will conclude Sunday with three rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches to determine the Sunshine State Winter Classic champion. With seeding based on team's pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's Baker and traditional team matches, SFA has earned the No. 3 seed for Sunday's bracket play and will take on fourth-seeded Sacred Heart in the opening round at 7:25 a.m.
The Ladyjacks can bowl for their second tournament title of the season Sunday afternoon with a first and second round win. Third-ranked Nebraska earned the top seed and faces No. 2 seed and second-ranked Vanderbilt in the first round.
