ARLINGTON, Texas – Moving up a spot in the standings on the final day of competition Sunday, the SFA bowling team finished fourth among a highly-competitive 12-team tournament field at the 2019 Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington. The Ladyjacks completed the three-day event held at the United States Bowling Congress' (USBC) International Training and Research Center with a pinfall total of 12,441 as senior bowler Dakotah Hazlewood rose to 15th in the individual standings.
With 10 of the nation's top 11 teams present and every NCAA bowling national championship represented, SFA took on tournament host Prairie View A&M, third-ranked and defending national champion Vanderbilt and No. 1 McKendree on the third day of play.
In the sixth and final traditional team match of pool play, the Ladyjacks were narrowly defeated by Prairie View A&M (948-930), despite freshman Carlene Beyer bowling a 213 and Hazlewood contributing a 202 game. Earning the No. 4 seed for Sunday afternoon's bracket play, SFA ran into a red hot Vanderbilt squad in the first round. The fellow Southland Bowling League Commodores averaged a game score of 237.25 by posting impressive games of 239, 214, 242 and 254 in the match.
The Ladyjacks went pin-for-pin with the country's top team in a battle for third place, taking a 1-0 lead against McKendree after winning game one 225-153. SFA built their lead to 3-1 after claiming game three of the match 162-161 and game four 208-195, however, the Bearcats tied things up at 3-3 before edging the Ladyjacks 179-177 in a decisive game seven.
Hazlewood finished 15th among 80 total bowlers with a 197 game average and a pinfall total of 1,182 in the six traditional team matches, while Beyer placed 25th with 1,144 total pins and a 190.67 average.
