Senior is 32nd player in program history to notch 1,000+ points
CONWAY, Ark. - Shannon Bogues became the 32nd player in SFA men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau by pouring in a game-high 23 points, but the 'Jacks fell victim to a hot-shooting Central Arkansas squad who nailed 11 three-pointers en route to a 92-74 win Wednesday night inside the Farris Center.
Despite the loss, SFA remains in sixth place in the Southland Conference standings. Behind them, however, is a quartet of teams (Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) who are tied for seventh and sit just one game back of the 'Jacks heading down the home stretch.
FIRST HALF
• Holding the lead through the first four minutes of the game, SFA drew first blood when Bogues split a pair of free throws on the 'Jacks' opening possession. From there, UCA hit a free throw before Davonte Fitzgerald corralled his miss from three-point land and hammered home a two-handed dunk.
• Bogues broke a 5-5 deadlock by getting a driving layup to fall at the 16:15 mark. That layup handed SFA a 7-5 edge that would prove to be its last of the game.
• Following Bogues' score, Central Arkansas took off on a 13-2 run helmed by the play of Khaleem Bennett. The UCA guard punched home a dunk and added a three-pointer during the scoring spree that put the home team up 18-9 with 12:28 to go.
• SFA's lone bucket in that stretch came when Bogues rose up for a fast-break jam with 13:46 left. That dunk provided him with the two points he needed to get to 1,000 points for his SFA career.
• Central Arkansas extended its lead to 31-17 by employing a 7-2 run that started with a three-point make by Eddy Kayouloud with 8:48 left. Kayouloud also finished the surge with a mid-range jumper.
• The 'Jacks made it a single-digit game for the final time when Bogues started a 5-0 run with a mid-range jumper. Bogues finished the surge with a make at the foul line that trimmed the Bears' edge to 33-24 with 4:44 to go.
• From there, however, Central Arkansas went on a 16-5 run to end the half. Thatch Unruh netted seven points during that surge and added an assist to help the Bears take a 49-29 lead at the break.
• The Bears shot .515/.500/.615 in the opening frame while limiting the 'Jacks to a split of .343/.000/.455 in the frame.
SECOND HALF
• Using the combined offensive forces of Bogues and Harris, SFA used a 9-2 run near the midway point of the deciding frame to work themselves back into the thick of things. Harris punched home one of his two slam dunks in the frame during that surge while Bogues put the finishing touches on it with three free throw makes that cut the Bears' edge to 63-51 with 10:39 to go.
• Unfortunately, Central Arkansas answered with a 15-6 spree over the next three minutes to regain full control. Bennett capped off the run with a two-handed slam that put the hosts ahead 78-57 with 7:24 to go.
• The Bears' lead dipped below 20 points just twice more on the night.
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Bogues wrapped with a 5-of-17 shooting performance from the field. The free throw line is where Bogues did most of his damage, going 13-of-17 from there.
