SFA women in first, men second after opening day of SLC Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The opening day of the 2019 Southland Conference Indoor Championships was one of measured success for the SFA Track and Field team, which sits in good position to accomplish its team goals on Monday in the event's culmination. SFA swept the pole vault, taking the top spot in both the men's and women's competition, and was buoyed by a first-place finish in the women's distance medley relay to close out the day's competition.
With one day of competition in the books, SFA sits in first place on the women's side with a team total of 46 points, while maintaining a hold on second place on the men's side with 33.50 total points.
EVENT WINNERS

• Nastassja Campbell – Women's Pole Vault
• LaSean Davis, Allison Compass, Madison Compass, Kelsey Ramirez - Women's distance medley relay
THE WOMEN
• Nastassja Campbell won SFA's first gold medal of the meet with a first-place finish in the pole vault. Campbell also set the meet record in the process with her mark of 4.29m (14-0.75). Teammate Kaylee Bizzell was the runner-up in the event, finishing with a mark of 3.99m (13-1).
• Brittany Innis finished second in the women's 5000m run, while Taryn Surratt took fifth.
• Dominique Jackson and Jillian Turner both qualified for the final of the 60m hurdles.
• Cayla Burch, Dominique Jackson, Imani Nave and Aaliyah Teel all qualified for the finals in tomorrows 400m dash.
• In the women's 800m, LaSean Davis, Allison Compass and Madison Compass all qualified for the finals on Monday.
• Nave, Jackson and Burch also qualified for the finals in the 200m dash.
• Aolani Harris finished in seventh in the women's long jump.
THE MEN
• Branson Ellis won the men's pole vault with an NCAA qualifying mark of 5.50m.
• Antonio Ruiz finished fifth in the vault, while Chad Horstmann took sixth and Hunter Krc tied for seventh. SFA accumulated 18 points from the men's pole vault altogether.
• Awet Beraki scored for SFA in the 5000m run, placing eighth overall.
• Trenton Bridges notched a fourth-place finish in the weight throw and scored five point for the Lumberjacks.
• JaShuan Cook finished seventh in the men's high jump to claim a pair of points for the 'Jacks.
• Drake Murphy qualified for the finals in the 800m, while Ashton Callahan will race again in the 60m dash on Monday.

The two-day conference meet concludes on Monday, with competition beginning at 9:00 a.m with the conclusion of the heptathlon and concluding with the 4x400 relays at about 2:30 p.m.
