Junior goes 4-for-5 at the dish, drives in four
ARLINGTON, Texas - After witnessing UT-Arlington score four runs in the bottom of the ninth to come back and shock the SFA baseball team Friday night, junior infielder Sean Moore made sure history did not repeat itself less than 48 hours later.
After the Mavericks scored three runs in the ninth to force extra innings, Moore made sure 10 innings was as long as the game would go when hit two-run double in the top of the 10th pushed the go-ahead runs across in the 'Jacks' 11-9 victory over UT-Arlington Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | For the second-straight game, the 'Jacks were able to get their offense going in the opening frame. Brandon Uhse started the game with a double and Jared Martin kept the line moving with a one-out single that put runners on the corners. From there, Sean Moore legged out an infield single to score Uhse before Jordan Monacy laced a two-out RBI single to the gap in left-center to put SFA up 2-0.
T4 | Taking advantage of some shaky pitching by UTA starter Cesar Gomez, the 'Jacks put a four-spot on the board in the fourth. Monacy and Josh Campbell were each hit by a pitch to begin the frame and were moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Skylar Black. Antonio Lima made it 3-0 with an RBI groundout before Uhse delivered an RBI single to make matters 4-0. Jake Georgiades came up with the second hit of the frame, a single, and an error by the Mavericks in left field helped Uhse come around to score. Before the frame was over, Georgiades scampered home on a passed ball and increased SFA's edge to 6-0.
B4 | UT-Arlington broke up SFA's shutout bid with one swing of the bat in the home half of the fourth. After Jacob Stobart gave up a leadoff single to Will Olson, a one-out walk put runners on first and second. That set the table nicely for Zac Cook who launched a three-run homer to right that cut the 'Jacks' lead in half. After another walk by Stobart, junior Jeremy Rodriguez came on and finished the frame.
B5 | The Mavericks pulled within one run of the 'Jacks with a two-run fifth. Rodriguez gave up a single to lead off the frame before issuing a one-out walk. From there, Andrew Miller and Anthony Dominguez chased the junior from the game by ripping back-to-back RBI singles through SFA's infield. After that, Austin Roth emerged from SFA's bullpen and finished off the frame with a flyout and his first strikeout of the game.
T6 | Extra-base hits for the visitors put a stop to the Mavericks' string of five uncontested runs. Lima got things started with a one-out triple - SFA's first triple of the season and Lima's first career three-base hit - before Uhse's second double of the day brought the senior home. Moore capped SFA's two-run frame with a two-out RBI single that pushed the visitors' lead to 8-5.
B8 | Pitching in the eighth for SFA, Austin Hearn walked the first man he faced - Cook - before watching him move to second on a balk and third on a one-out passed ball. Jose Minjarez drove Cook in with an RBI groundout before Hearn ended the frame with another groundout.
T9 | Moore was hit with a pitch to start the frame and SFA wound up loading the bases after Monacy came up with a one-out single and Campbell was plunked with a pitch. With two outs, Moore raced home on a passed ball, giving the 'Jacks a 9-6 lead.
B9 | Coming on in the hopes of earning his second save in three days, Tyler Starks got the frame's first out before giving up a seemingly innocuous single to Connor Aube. That single brought Olson to the plate who cut the 'Jacks' lead to one by bashing a two-run homer to right. The Mavericks, unfortunately, weren't done after that long ball as Miller rapped a one-out double to left. Dominguez tied the game with an RBI single, but Casen White saved the game by throwing out pinch runner Phillip Childs at the plate for the inning's final out.
T10 | Once in the 10th, the 'Jacks didn't waste any time in retaking the lead. Nick Daley drew a four-pitch walk before Georgiades punched a single to left-center. That brought Moore up to the plate who continued to victimize UTA pitching with a two-run double to left field. With that two-bagger, SFA opened up an 11-9 lead.
AT THE DISH
• Moore and Uhse were forces to be reckoned with at the plate, collecting seven of the 'Jacks' season-high 14 hits. Moore's four-hit effort was his first in an SFA uniform and the first four-hit outing by a Lumberjack this season. His four RBI not only represented a game-best, but a season-high by an individual SFA player too.
• Uhse finished with a trio of hits while driving in a pair. The freshman also scored three of SFA's 11 runs.
• Georgiades and Monacy notched two hits apiece as well and combined for three more runs.
• Five UT-Arlington players put forth multi-hit efforts and all five finished with two base knocks apiece to fuel the Mavericks' 13-hit attack. Aube, Dominguez, Miller, Olson and Dylan Paul each had a pair of hits and combined to drive in five of the home team's nine runs. Cook's three RBI represented a team-high for UT-Arlington who lost its second-straight.
ON THE MOUND
• Starks (1-0) got credit for his first win of the season while Cully Mangus came in and tossed a scoreless 10th for his first collegiate save.
• Austin Roth kept the 'Jacks in it during the middle portion of the game, firing 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. He and Mangus were the only two SFA arms who did not give up any runs to the Mavericks.
• Stobart, SFA's starter, lasted 3 1/3 innings and struck out a pair. The junior gave up just a pair of hits and also walked two.
• Dylan Schneider (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits and two walks in the 10th inning. Each of the five UT-Arlington pitchers gave up at least one run.
MISCELLANEOUS
• SFA improves to 2-0 in extra-inning games this season. Both of those wins came this weekend at the 2019 UTA Classic.
• Moore has put forth at least one hit in each of the six games he has played in this season. The junior has racked up 10 of SFA's 32 total RBI.
ON DECK
• After five in a row on the road, the 'Jacks return to Jaycees Field for five straight games. That week-long home stretch starts Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. when SFA plays host to non-conference and in-state foe Prairie View A&M.
