NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA women's basketball team found itself in uncharted territory on Wednesday night, having suffered its first conference loss and first loss in almost two months. Even still, the Ladyjacks are 12-1 in conference play and return home to face Incarnate Word (3-21 overall, 3-10 SLC) in a winnable game on Saturday afternoon as they look to get back in the win column.
The game will be a doubleheader between the men's and women's programs from both institutions, with the women set to tip-off first at 2:00 p.m. That contest will be shown on ESPN+, with third-year play-by-play man Bobby Mauro's call of the action accompanying the stream. Mauro's call can also be heard on Q107.7 FM in and around the Nacogdoches area.
In Wednesday's game, a myriad of factors kept the Ladyjacks from ever getting into their offensive rhythm. A poor shooting night, along with a myriad of whistles and other stoppages, led to a slow and low-scoring game, and despite holding the Islanders to just 46 points in the contest SFA was unable to pull out the win. Even still, the Ladyjacks rank first in the league in field goal percentage (51.7 percent), three-point percentage (40.9 percent), three-point defense (22.7 percent) and field goal percentage defense (33.1 percent). Slipping slightly in scoring offense (73.1) after Wednesday's debacle, the Ladyjacks still rank fourth in conference play in that category.
SFA's newest member of the 1000-point scorers club is senior guard Chanell Hayes, who enters Saturday with 1000 points exactly and a team-leading average of 14.7 points per game. Classmate Imani Johnson is second on the team in scoring (12.7) and is the leading rebounder at 5.6 boards per game. The 'Jacks will look to extend a nine-game winning streak against the Cardinals, who sit near the bottom of the league standings and have yet to beat SFA in nine all-time matchups.
Earlier this season in San Antonio, the Cardinals took advantage of a sloppy effort by the 'Jacks to take a lead heading into the fourth quarter in a game that on paper should not have been that close. Enter freshman forward Aiyana Johnson, who scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the fourth and final quarter to help SFA pull away and get the road win. Since then, the Cardinals have doubled their win total by going 2-6 in the eight conference games since. Scoring offense (55.1) and defense (74.7) continue to be an issue for the Cardinals, but by ranking second in conference play in three-point percentage defense (24.2), the Cardinals have the tools in place to limit one of SFA's biggest threats, three-point shooting.
