Bowling Goes 3-0 Sunday to Close Out Fifth Annual Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic

Ladyjacks earn trio of top-10 victories on final day of home tournament
DALLAS – It was a perfect 3-0 day for the SFA bowling team Sunday at USA Bowl in Dallas as the Ladyjacks closed out their fifth annual Stormin' Ladyjack Classic with a trio of victories over top-10 opponents. Improving to finish 8-5 at the three-day event, SFA finished fifth among the tournament's 12-team field, which included five of the nation's top five teams and eight of the top 10.
Freshman Carlene Beyer became the Ladyjacks' third bowler to claim MVP honors at a tournament this season, joining seniors Paige Beeney and Dakotah Hazlewood after averaging a 214.83 score in six traditional team games over Saturday and Sunday.
The Ladyjacks wrapped up traditional team match play Sunday morning with a strong 1,003-873 triumph over ninth-ranked Tulane. Getting a 218 from Hazlewood, Beyer recorded her fifth 200-pin game of the weekend with a 223. With the win in the final round of traditional team match play, SFA earned the No. 5 seed for Sunday's best 4-of-7 bracket play and faced eighth-seeded and No. 10 ranked North Carolina A&T in the first of two Baker match rounds.
After dropping game one of the match 230-194, the Ladyjacks reversed the score and earned a 230-194 game two victory before falling behind 2-1 after a 215-206 game three loss. SFA would go up 3-2 with 201-166 and 223-168 game four and game five wins, however, the match became knotted up at 3-3 as North Carolina A&T claimed game six by a count of 175-169. In the decisive game seven, the Ladyjacks prevailed and with a 192-152 final game victory to clinch the match 4-3.
Advancing to the fifth-place match, SFA took on fourth-ranked and No. 6 seed Arkansas State. The Ladyjacks grabbed a narrow, three-pin win (207-204) in the opening game of the match, before Arkansas State tied things up at 1-1 with a 175-167 game two. Determined to finish the tournament in fine form, SFA rolled its way to victories in the final three games (185-181, 199-182, 212-210) to claim fifth place with a 4-1 rout.
Beyer knocked down 1,289 total pins across the traditional team matches to claim top individual honors among 73 total bowlers. Hazlewood also finished among the top 20 by placing 19th with 1,160 total pins and an average game score of 193.3, while sophomore Sarah Gill finished 26th with a 190.5 average and a pinfall total of 1,143. Beeney wasn't too far behind in 30th place with 1,125 total pins and a per game average of 187.5.
Second-ranked and third-seeded Vanderbilt won it first Stormin' Ladyjack Classic title by defeating top-ranked and No. 4 seed McKendree 4-2 in Sunday afternoon's championship match. Second-seeded and fifth-ranked Sam Houston State took home third place with a 4.5-1.5 win over top-seeded and third-ranked Nebraska.
In addition to Beyer, the all-tournament team was comprised of Nebraska's Meghan Straub (212.83), McKendree's Breanna Clemmer (207.67), Wisconsin-Whitewater's Emma Kuhn (207.17), Vanderbilt's Samantha Gainor (205.17) and Arkansas State's Denisyha Waller (204.67).
