‘Jacks set to take on the two-day LaTour Intercollegiate in Matthews, Louisiana, which features Southland-heavy 12-team field
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the first time since late October of 2018, the SFA men's golf team will be on the links competing as the Lumberjacks tee off their spring championship season this week in Matthews, Louisiana, at Nicholls' LaTour Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 18-19 at the LaTour Golf Club.
The Format
Two 18-hole rounds will take place Monday, Feb. 18 with round one getting started at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Round two of the tournament will directly follow the opening 18 holes of play Monday, before the third and final round concludes the two-day event Tuesday morning with another 8 a.m. shotgun start.
The Course
The LaTour Golf Club is located deep in the serenity of Louisiana's bayou country and features a par-72 championship course that was designed by PGA tour champion David Toms. Sitting on 597 acres of rolling grasslands and lakes, the greens span 7,170 yards.
The Tournament Field
The LaTour Intercollegiate has a strong Southland Conference flavor as seven of the league's 11 men's golf teams will be present in Matthews. Joining SFA and tournament host Nicholls will be Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, the University of the Incarnate Word, New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana. North Dakota, Prairie View A&M, Samford, Texas-Rio Grande Valley and NAIA member the University of Mobile complete the 12-team tournament field.
The Lineup
Anchored by seniors Jake Hendrix and Angelo Leyvani, the Lumberjacks' lineup for the week includes freshmen Isiah Henderson and Johannes Gudmundsson and sophomore Steven Fabik. Competing as an individual will be freshman Alec Brown. For both Gudmundsson and Brown, the LaTour Intercollegiate will serve as just the second tournament played in as a Lumberjack.
Tee Times
Paired with Nicholls, Central Arkansas and Houston Baptist for Monday's first and second rounds, SFA will tee off on holes one through five with Brown beginning on hole 16 and joined by fellow individual golfers from Nicholls and Central Arkansas. Leyvani will start on hole one as Hendrix will tee off from hole two, Henderson hole three, Gudmundsson hole four and Fabik hole five.
Last Time On the Links
The 'Jacks closed out their fall slate of tournaments at the Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the Chenal Country Club (Oct. 22-23). Leyvani shined at the event by tying for 20th among 90 total golfers with a three-round score of 4-over 220 (75-73-72), his fourth top-20 finish of 2018-19, while Hendrix tied for 38th with a two-day total of 8-over 224 (75-75-74). Finishing 13th among a competitive 17-team tournament field, the 'Jacks shot 34-over 898 as a team but improved their 18-hole score by 10 strokes in the final round, carding a 4-over 292.
Last Year in Louisiana
The LaTour Intercollegiate was formerly played as the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate the previous four years, however, Monday will mark SFA's debut at the annual event. The last time the 'Jacks competed in the Pelican State was March 26-27, 2018, when SFA played in the Lake Charles Invitational at the Golden Nugget Country Club. The 'Jacks took home a third-place finish among 11 teams as Hendrix tied for 14th and Leyvani tied for 24th.
Up Next…
SFA will have three weeks off before returning to tournament action Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12 at the University of Houston's Border Olympics, hosted in Laredo, Texas, at the Laredo Country Club.
