Ladyjacks pick up three wins over top-25 teams, including pair of top-five triumphs
DALLAS – On day two of SFA bowling's own Stormin' Ladyjack Classic inside USA Bowl in Dallas, the Ladyjacks earned three wins over top-25 opponents and defeated two of the nation's current top five programs. SFA rolled its way to traditional team match victories over fellow Southland Bowling League members second-ranked Vanderbilt and fourth-ranked Arkansas State as the Ladyjacks sit in fifth place among the tournament's 12-team field with a cumulative pinfall total of 9,545 and a 5-5 record.
Adding 4,811 additional pins to its total Saturday, SFA picked up a 994-952 win over No. 24 Adelphi in its second match of the day. Following a 975-844 loss to 16th-ranked Central Missouri, the Ladyjacks benefited from a career-high game of 245 from freshman Carlene Beyer and got a 225 score from junior Megan Eaglehouse.
Despite running into a red-hot Nebraska team who bowled an impressive 1,046, two SFA bowlers posted game scores over 200 with Beyer rolling her third consecutive 200-pin game at 216 and senior Dakotah Hazlewood adding a 205 to help the Ladyjacks total 966 pins in the match.
SFA closed out day two of competition with two of its best performances. Four different Ladyjacks collected 200-pin games in SFA's 1,040-1,018 victory over No. 2 Vanderbilt as Beyer registered her fourth-straight game over 200 with a 205. Hazlewood recorded a 225 in the match, while sophomore Sarah Gill contributed a 223 and senior Paige Beeney a 208. In their fifth and final matchup, the Ladyjacks were 967-912 victors with Gill bowling a match-best 199 and Beeney (197) and Beyer (196) both adding games over 190.
After five strong traditional games Saturday, Beyer is in second place among 72 individual bowlers with a 213.2 average and a pinfall total of 1,066. Gill knocked down 959 pins Saturday to average a game score of 191.8 and rank 24th in the individual standings. Beeney ranks 31st among all traditional team match bowlers with a game average of 188.6 and 943 pins, followed directly by Hazlewood in 32nd place with a 188.4 per game score and 942 pins.
Defending Stormin' Ladyjack Classic champion and third-ranked Nebraska leads the three-day, 13-match event with a pinfall total of 9,821 and a 7-3 record. Fifth-ranked Sam Houston State stands in second place at 8-2 with 9,800 total pins, while No. 2 Vanderbilt is third owning a pinfall total of 9,745 and a 7-3 record.
The fifth annual Stormin' Ladyjack Classic concludes Sunday with one final traditional team match at 8:30 a.m., followed by two rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches to determine a tournament champion. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play will be determined by team's pinfall total from Friday's Baker matches and the six traditional team matches.
SFA will see ninth-ranked Tulane Sunday morning for the Ladyjacks' final traditional team match.
