
Ladyjacks Start Nugget Tournament with Win Over UCSB

RENO, NV -- The SFA women's basketball team out-rebounded the UCSB Gauchos 34-32 on the way to a 67-56 win at Lawlor Events Center Friday.
SFA's overall record moved to 3-2 following the win.
The Ladyjacks had three players score in double figures, led by Marissa Banfield, who had 16 points and three steals. Aiyana Johnson tacked on 15 points and four assists and Alyssa Mayfield chipped in as well with 10 points, six rebounds and two steals from the bench.
The SFA offense knocked down eight threes on 18 attempts. Banfield was the most prolific shooter for the Ladyjacks, draining four treys in the contest.
SFA's defense held UCSB to only 39% shooting from the field.

GAME SUMMARY
SFA kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 17-15.
UCSB kept adding to that lead, building a 31-28 advantage before SFA went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Banfield, to take a 33-31 lead. The Ladyjacks kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 36-34 advantage heading into halftime. SFA was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 21 points.
SFA continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run to expand its lead further to 46-39 with 1:47 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Gauchos had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Ladyjacks still entered the fourth quarter with a 47-42 edge. SFA played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
SFA kept widening that lead, expanding it to 61-53 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 67-53 with 27 seconds to go in the contest. The Gauchos narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Ladyjacks still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-56 win. SFA got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 20 total points..
