Complete Southland Conference Release
FRISCO, Texas - By helping pilot the SFA soccer team into the Southland Conference Tournament for the 16th-consecutive season, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Madeline Talbot was named the Southland Conference Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week in a release issued by the league office Sunday afternoon.
Talbot became the first - and only - Ladyjacks to earn a Southland Conference weekly honor this season with Sunday afternoon's news and became the first SFA backstop since Allyson Smith in 2017 to be named the Southland Conference Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week.
Needing a victory over longtime Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State Friday night to ensure its spot in the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament, the Ladyjacks got one thanks in part to the play of Talbot. The Shreveport, La., product amassed all six of her saves in the Ladyjacks' 2-1 victory over the Bearkats in the opening half, helping to preserve a 1-0 halftime lead for SFA.
The only time the Bearkats found the back of the net against Talbot came on a penalty shot try late in the second half. On the year, Talbot has posted a 3-1-0 record between the pipes with all three of those triumphs coming in Southland Conference matches. Two of those three wins came in the last week to help the Ladyjacks make the cut for postseason play.
Earlier this year, Talbot put on a spectacular showing in goal by making 18 saves in a narrow double-overtime setback at Abilene Christian. Those 18 saves were the second-most in a single game in program history and the most in a match by an NCAA Division I netminder this season.
Talbot and the rest of the Ladyjacks will depart Texas for Conway, Ark., early this week in order to take part in the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament. SFA, who is the eight-seed, is scheduled to take on top-seeded and 2019 Southland regular season champion Lamar in the quarterfinal round of the league tournament at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon from the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
