FRISCO, Texas - On the heels of one of the Southland's best individual performances of the 2019 season, SFA women's cross country junior Kelsey Ramirez has been named the Southland Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
With Tuesday's news, Ramirez has now been named the Southland Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week two out of the eight times it has been doled out in 2019. Last Saturday morning in College Station, Texas, the LaPorte, Texas, product led the Ladyjacks to an 11th-place team finish at the Arturo Barrios Invitational.
Individually, Ramirez traversed the six-kilometer course in a time of 20:45.3 to finish in 11th place overall. The junior was the second Southland student-athlete to cross the finish line in College Station that morning and was one of just two runners from league institutions to finish among the top 15 in the 242-woman field.
Thanks to their 11th-place finish, the Ladyjacks rose three spots in the latest edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Central Region rankings. SFA is now sixth in the region after being ranked ninth before last Saturday's meet.
Ramirez and the rest of the Ladyjacks will be training over the next week-and-a-half to prepare for the 2019 Southland Conference Championships. On Friday, Nov. 1, SFA heads to Conway, Ark., where they will try to capture the Southland Conference title at Beaver Fork Lake.
