FRISCO, Texas - For the second time this season - and for the fourth time in his career - SFA men's basketball junior Kevon Harris has claimed the title of Southland Conference Player of the Week. The league made the announcement Wednesday afternoon by issuing a press release.
Hailing from Ellenwood, Ga., the guard/forward put on quite the show for a sold-out William R. Johnson Coliseum and nearly helped SFA spring an upset against visiting Alabama last Sunday evening.
Going up against the Crimson Tide - the first SEC opponent to set foot in Nacogdoches and the first member of a power five conference to play at SFA since 2009 - Harris poured in 16 of his 18 points in the second half. That helped the 'Jacks shrink Alabama's lead down to just three points after it had increased to as many as 12 throughout the final frame.
Though SFA's efforts came up just short, Harris made sure the 'Jacks had a chance right up until the final horn. The junior went 7-of-12 (.583) from the field and finished with four rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot and one steal.
With the performance, Harris hiked his season field goal percentage to .492 - a figure that ranks third among all Southland Conference players. Currently he ranks second among SFA's ranks and ninth in the Southland in scoring with an average of 14.2 points per game. Harris' rebounding average of 6.3 per outing leads SFA and is the eighth-highest in the Southland.
Harris and the rest of the 'Jacks begin their quest for the program's first Southland Conference regular season title since the 2015-16 campaign tonight inside William R. Johnson Coliseum. At 6:30 p.m., SFA plays host to defending league co-champion Southeastern Louisiana in a rematch of the 2018 Southland Conference Tournament championship game. ESPN+ and the ESPN app will carry the action.
