Ladyjacks go 5-0 Saturday in traditional team matches as senior Dakotah Hazlewood averages an impressive 242.4 to claim top individual honors
LIMERICK, Pa. – Day two of Kutztown University's Kutztown Invitational in Limerick, Pennsylvania, saw the SFA bowling team turn in one of its finest single-day performances of the season to date. The Ladyjacks held onto their second-place standing in the 28-team tournament field by bowling their way to five-straight victories in traditional team matches Saturday at Limerick Bowl.
SFA, who now owns a record of 9-1, added 5,107 pins on day two for a pinfall total of 10,287 as fellow Southland Bowling League member and fourth-ranked Arkansas State remains in the lead with an identical 9-1 mark and 10,469 pins. The Ladyjacks sit comfortably ahead of No. 7 Fairleigh Dickson, who has collected 9,979 pins and gone 8-2.
Four of SFA's five wins Saturday came against top-25 opponents as the Ladyjacks began the day with a pair of wins over the nation's best. Behind senior Dakotah Hazlewood's 214, SFA rolled its way to a 965-917 triumph over the country's 13th-ranked team in Delaware State, before edging No. 21 Adelphi by 14 pins (994-980). The Ladyjacks got a strong game of 230 from Hazlewood in the win over Adelphi and were greatly aided by junior Megan Eaglehouse's 203.
In its final three matches of the day, SFA eclipsed the 1,000-pin mark as Hazlewood continued to improve her game score each contest. A 1,039-922 victory over Chestnut Hill saw four different Ladyjacks reach the 200-pin mark with Hazlewood's 237 leading the way, followed by freshman Carlene Beyer's 213, Eaglehouse's 206 and senior Paige Beeney's 201. SFA routed 17th-ranked Monmouth 1,066-840 in its fourth match as Hazlewood bowled a 257, Beeney a 235 and Eaglehouse a 204.
Hazlewood's career-high game of 274 highlighted the Ladyjacks' 1,043-939 win over tournament host No. 25 Kutztown to close out day two of competition. Sophomore Sarah Gill claimed a 205 game in the match and Beeney contributed a 202.
Knocking down 1,212 pins and averaging a score of 242.4 in the five traditional games, Hazlewood earned top individual honors among 182 total bowlers. Her 242.4 average Saturday is the highest by a Ladyjack bowler in five traditional games since First-Team All-American Stephanie Schwartz ('18) averaged a 245.6 at the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational.
Beeney tied for the 22nd-highest pinfall average among all bowlers Saturday with 1,014 total pins and a game average of 202.8, while Eaglehouse was 32nd (198.2), Beyer 49th (190.4) and Gill 60th (187.6).
The 2019 Kutztown Invitational champion will be determined Sunday with three rounds of best 4-of-7 Baker matches in bracket play format getting underway at 7:25 a.m. CST. Based on team's pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's Baker and traditional matches, SFA has earned the No. 2 seed for Sunday's championship bracket and will bowl against top-seeded and fourth-ranked Arkansas State in the opening round.
