Full Southland Conference Athlete of the Week Release
FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference office announced its first Athlete of the Week honors of the indoor season on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the SFA track and field team earning both the women's track and field athletes of the week awards. Sophomore Kelsey Ramirez earns her first Athlete of the Week accolade thanks to having a hand in the breaking of two school records over the weekend, while freshman pole vaulter Nastassja Campbell earned her first accolade as well with a superb vault in Saturday's competition.
Ramirez, a native of La Porte, Texas, helped open the Ted Nelson Invitational with a bang for SFA, as she ran the mile leg of the distance medley relay which took the top spot in the event at the meet and broke the school previous school record of 11:59.41 with a time of 11:56.30. Ramirez wasn't finished, however, and broke her second school record of the meet with a time of 4:52.48 in the mile run.
Campbell earns her first weekly accolade after a fantastic performance in Saturday's pole vault event. The New Caney, Texas native cleared a height of 4.39m (14-4.75) in the event to finish second overall. That mark puts her atop the Southland Conference and third nationally in the pole vault.
Chris Jefferson of Sam Houston State and Christopher Welch of Houston Baptist earned the Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively. Antonio Ruiz was an honorable mention in the men's field athlete voting with the second most votes.
SFA Track and Field returns to action this weekend at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. Competition starts at 10 a.m on Friday.
