
SFA Men Race to Tenth-Place Finish, Women Take 12th

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Stephen F. Austin cross country team began its Saturday with some strong performances at the 30thannual Chili Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The SFA men placed 10thin the 49-team field with a total of 346 points, while the women took 12thout of 51 teams with a score of 380. Host Arkansas won both the men's and women's races.
Awet Beraki, a true freshman, paced both squads with a tenth place finish overall and a time of 24:39 in his first collegiate 8K. Titus Kiplagat, a redshirt freshman, placed 27thwith a time of 25:15.4, giving the men two Top-30 finishes. Erich Rotich and Grant Tiff finished in quick succession at 105 and 106, respectively. Rotich finished with a time of 26:29.1, while Tiff finished in 26:29.4. Rounding out the scoring on the men's side was Pedro Flores, who finished with a time of 27:02.3 in 147th. Chris Shirk finished the race in 28:42.7, and Caleb Stewart ran to a time of 29:52.2.
In the women's race, Taryn Surratt was the top Ladyjack finisher in 35th, running to a time of 18:17.5 in the 5K race. Claire Crone finished in 42ndplace, coming in at 18:26.6. Kelsey Ramirez would place 77thafter a race which saw her finish with a time of 18:53.0, while Elizabeth Guerra would finish fourth on the team and 104thoverall with a time of 19:18.7. True freshman Alexis Antkowiak rounded out the Ladyjacks scoring with a time of 19:40.6 in 127thplace. Carolyn Evans finished at 156thand with a time of 20:05.3, followed by LaSean Davis in 172ndwith a mark of 20:19.1.
The 'Jacks are next in action at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station on October 13.
