SFA women’s golf to compete in The Lady Maxwell tournament, an eight-team, three-day event held August 31-Sept. 2
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Over four months ago the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team saw their 2017-18 season come to an end at the 2018 Southland Conference Championship. On Friday, the Ladyjacks will begin anew and tee off their 2018-19 season by taking on The Lady Maxwell, an eight-team, three-day tournament hosted by Oral Roberts University in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
Held at the Dornick Hills Country Club Friday-Sunday, Aug. 31-Sept. 2, The Lady Maxwell features teams from the Southland Conference, Sun Belt Conference, Conference USA, the Missouri Valley Conference and the Summit League. Fellow Southland member Sam Houston State, in addition to tournament host Oral Roberts and Missouri State, Texas State, Troy, UT Arlington and UTSA will all meet on the par-71, 6,037-yard course.
With two new additions to this year's roster in true freshmen Zayda Cedillo and Lyndy Laurrell, both of whom will compete as individuals with sophomore Kelly Yang, SFA's lineup for this weekend will be comprised of five returnees. Senior Erica Lautensack, junior Alexandra Batista, sophomore Alexis Szewczyk, senior Jamee Jorgensen and junior Paola Cortes complete the Ladyjacks' inaugural lineup of the fall season as teams will play together for the first two days of competition.
The Lady Maxwell will get underway at 12:30 p.m. Friday with the first tee times of the tournament. Individual competitors will take on the course first, followed by Troy teeing off at 1 p.m. SFA is scheduled to play the 2,840-yard front nine starting at 1:48 p.m. before testing the 3,197-yard back nine.
Saturday's second round of play will feature an earlier start as individual tee times are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with UT Arlington starting at 8:30 a.m. The Ladyjacks are slated to get their second round underway at 9:18 a.m. before Sunday's pairings are set based on the first two days' results. A double tee from hole No. 1 and No. 10 will take place Sunday beginning at 8 a.m.
The Ladyjacks turned in a pair of top-five finishes in 2017-18, including placing third out of 11 teams last fall at the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational. SFA also claimed a fifth-place showing at its own ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational in Trophy Club, Texas. Led by seniors Lautensack and Jorgensen, the Ladyjacks should have a good balance of both youth and experience in 2018-19.
Talented juniors Batista and Cortes join sophomores Szewczyk and Yang, who are both looking to have a breakout fall. Freshmen Cedillo, a native of Inez, Texas, and four-year letter winner at Victoria East High School, and Laurrell from Rockdale, Texas, and Rockdale High School hope to make an immediate impact on the team following illustrious prep careers.
Lautensack and Batista led the Ladyjacks in 2017-18, both averaging scores near 77 for the year and accounting for eight of SFA's 12 total top-20 individual finishes. Jorgensen notched three top-20 placements, while Cortes held the fourth-highest scoring average among returning Ladyjacks.
