ARLINGTON, Texas - In its first - and only - tune-up match before beginning the 2018 campaign Friday night in Memphis, Tenn., the Stephen F. Austin volleyball team finally got a chance to see what it could do against in-state opposition after battling each other for almost two weeks in preseason camp.
At the end of the night, the result was an encouraging one for the defending Southland Conference champions.
Senior outside hitter Haley Coleman (13 kills, 12 digs) and junior setter Ann Hollas (24 assists, 12 digs) registered double-doubles and the Ladyjacks took four out of five sets played against Sun Belt adversary UT-Arlington at College Park Center.
Coleman and sophomore Anyia Williams each finished with 13 kills for SFA who hit .200 for the match. Senior McKenzie Brewer split time at setter with Hollas and dished out 18 assists while freshman Sabrina Monaco had a fine debut in the back row by scooping up a match-best 18 digs.
SET ONE | SFA 25, UT-Arlington 15
• With Hollas directing the action from the service line, the Ladyjacks drilled the Mavericks with a 9-0 run to begin the match. Hollas posted a kill and one of her two service aces during the run while sophomore Anyia Williams punched down two of her match-high 13 kills.
• Four of SFA's 10 kills in the first frame came in the 9-0 surge to start the match. For the set, the Ladyjacks hit .360 and committed only one error.
• UT-Arlington, on the other hand, attacked at a clip of just .172 and never trimmed SFA's lead to fewer than five points.
• Anyia Williams racked up both her her block assists for the match in the opening frame.
SET TWO | SFA 25, UT-Arlington 16
• Another sizable scoring surge - this one of the 10-0 variety in the middle of the frame - proved to be the difference for SFA as its lead swelled to 2-0.
• Unlike the opening frame, it was the Mavericks who came out as the aggressors by using a pair of kills and one of their three service aces to open up a 4-1 advantage.
• Unfazed, the Ladyjacks made sure the Mavericks' edge never grew greater than four points and senior Peyton Redmond stepped to the service line where she proceeded to put the visitors up for the rest of the set.
• With SFA down 11-7, a bad set by UT-Arlington gave SFA the serve. Through the Ladyjacks' ensuing 10-0 run, Redmond single-handedly victimized the Mavericks by amassing three service aces. Junior Danae Daron added a pair of kills and three unforced UT-Arlington errors helped SFA's cause as well.
• Ahead by a 17-11 margin after the run, the Ladyjacks' lead never dipped below five points the rest of the set. SFA's effectiveness on the attack took a slight dip as the Ladyjacks hit .278 but a stout defensive effort limited UT-Arlington to a .152 attack percentage through set two.
SET THREE | UT-Arlington 25, SFA 12
• For the second-straight set UT-Arlington struck first, but unlike set two SFA could not muster a response.
• Three of the first four points in the frame went to the Mavericks but the Ladyjacks remained within striking distance after a termination from junior Xariah Williams cut the home squad's lead to 9-7.
• From there, however, the Mavericks took control. UT-Arlington ended the set on a 16-5 run to cut SFA's lead in the match to 2-1. Seven unforced attack errors by the Ladyjacks in the set as well as one service error handed the Mavericks eight free points in the frame.
• As a result of their unforced miscues, the Ladyjacks hit -.172 (four kills, nine errors on 29 swings) in the set. UT-Arlington enjoyed its best offensive set of the night, hitting .320 with 11 kills.
SET FOUR | SFA 25, UT-Arlington 16
• Just as they did in the first set, SFA jumped out to an early lead as Anyia Williams and Coleman slapped down kills to give the visitors a 3-1 edge early.
• Though the Ladyjacks never trailed in the set, they were forced to hold off the Mavericks who trimmed SFA's lead down to two on seven occasions.
• After a UT-Arlington kill cut the Ladyjacks' edge to 12-10, SFA employed 10 kills during a 13-6 run which clinched the set.
• The Ladyjacks' offensive efficiency recovered nicely following a poor third set as SFA hit .333 and racked up 18 of its 55 kills in the set.
SET FIVE | SFA 15, UT-Arlington 13
• Trailing the Mavericks 11-9 in the fifth and final frame, SFA called on Anyia Williams to spark a comeback and the sophomore responded by smashing in three kills during the Ladyjacks' 6-2 run to end the match.
• The Ladyjacks' defense came up big in the set, limiting UT-Arlington to only five kills on 22 swings and five errors.
