Former wideout for SFA football signs with Chargers following impressive rookie minicamp weekend
Los Angeles Chargers release
LOS ANGELES, La. – Former Stephen F. Austin football wide receiver Justice Liggins put pen to paper Monday, signing with the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers following an impressive three days of practice as a non-contract participant at the organization's rookie minicamp over the weekend. Liggins, a four-year letter winner for the Lumberjacks (2013-16) and a native of Tyler, Texas, had signed a reserve/future contract with the Indianapolis Colts but was released from the organization on May 1.
The 6-foot-1, 209-pound wide receiver took part in the Colts' training camp this past August and had a sensational 29-yard touchdown reception against the Cincinnati Bengals in the final week of the preseason. His fourth-quarter grab proved to be the game-winning score as Indianapolis held on for a 7-6 win. Prior to spending the 2017 NFL preseason with the Colts, Liggins was with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League for a couple of weeks.
During his career at SFA, Liggins played in 36 games for the 'Jacks and made 13 starts. He completed his career in Nacogdoches ranked 31st all-time in program history in receiving yards (1,166). Liggins reeled in 102 passes in his four years and scored eight touchdowns, registering two 100-yard receiving games. As a senior in 2016, Liggins started 10 games and collected 49 receptions for 641 yards, the second-most receiving yards of any SFA player, and three touchdowns. Liggins competed in all 11 games for the 'Jacks as a junior in 2015 and made three starts, claiming 31 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns. During his sophomore campaign in 2014, Liggins saw action in eight games while making 19 catches for 174 yards and scoring once. He appeared in seven games as a true freshman in 2013, primarily playing on special teams but totaling three receptions for 33 yards on the season.
Liggins becomes the fifth former SFA player currently signed with a professional football team after former starting quarterback and 2014 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year Zach Conque inked with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this week. He joins defensive end John Franklin, who was recently drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, defensive end Willie Jefferson (Saskatchewan Roughriders), offensive lineman Terran Vaughn (Saskatchewan Roughriders) and Conque as Lumberjack football players currently playing professional. Furthermore, Liggins is one of five 'Jacks to have suited up for an NFL team during the head coach Clint Conque era at SFA. Liggins is accompanied by running back Gus Johnson (2014), Vaughn (2015), Conque (2016) and Franklin (2017) as former 'Jacks who played for coach Conque at SFA and have made appearances on NFL rosters in recent years.
The Chargers went 9-7 in 2017 and finished second in the AFC West Division with a 6-6 record against fellow AFC teams, missing the NFL Playoffs by one game.
