Women’s Golf Drops Pair of Matches to Wrap Up Regular Season

Ladyjacks fall 4-1 to both South Alabama and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Lamar Cardinal Match Play Challenge
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – In its final tune-up for next week's 2018 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship, the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team took on the four-team Lamar Cardinal Match Play Challenge Monday at the Beaumont Country Club in Beaumont, Texas. After a near two-week break from competition, the Ladyjacks wrapped up the regular season with a pair of matches against South Alabama and fellow Southland member Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
However, things did not go the way of SFA Monday as the Ladyjacks dropped their morning match to the Jaguars 4-1 and suffered the same result against the Islanders in the afternoon's consolation match of the event. The one-day, 36-hole challenge played on a par-71, 5,942-yard course saw just two SFA golfers earn wins across the two matches.
In the Ladyjacks' contest with South Alabama to begin the day, redshirt junior Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas) defeated the Jaguars' Siti Shaari 4 and 3 at the top spot. It would be the lone point SFA would win in the match as sophomore Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas) was handed a 5 and 3 loss to South Alabama's Julie Hovland and redshirt junior Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) fell to the Jaguars' Madison Connell by the same count. Sophomore Paola Cortes (Allen, Texas) was edged 1 up by Mackenzie Peyton of South Alabama, while the Jaguars' Caroline Berge topped freshman Alexis Szewczyk (McKinney, Texas) 4 and 3.
With the two winning teams from the morning's matches taking on each other for the event's championship, the two losing teams battled in the consolation match. Lamar claimed a narrow 3-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi during the morning's first round, before South Alabama claimed the event title with a 3-2 win over the host Cardinals.
Batista was the Ladyjacks' lone victor in their consolation matchup with the Islanders, ousting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Brooklyn Sutton in a tightly contested 1 up round. At the top spot, Lautensack was bested 4 and 3 by the Islanders' Autumn Bynum while the two teams' No. 3 golfers ended their bout with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Daniela Bergman 1 up on Jorgensen. The Islanders' Olivia Lowe handed Cortes a 7 and 5 loss as Julia Dereniwsky of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished 3 and 2 over Szewczyk.
