
Three Stephen F. Austin Football Players Named 2018 NFF Hampshire Honor Society Members

Marlon Walls, Trent Perriman and John Franklin earn a spot in the National Football Foundation’s 1,251-player Hampshire Honor Society
IRVING, Texas – The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced the members of the 2018 NFF Hampshire Honor Society Wednesday morning and among the all-time high 1,251 players, Stephen F. Austin football's own Marlon Walls, Trent Perriman and John Franklin appeared on the list. Comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their collegiate careers, a record-tying 302 schools qualified for membership in the society's 12th year of existence.
Walls, who was most recently named one of two 17th Division I Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Scholar-Athletes of the Year, completed his Lumberjack career with an unblemished 4.0 GPA as an Engineering Physics major with an emphasis in mechanical engineering. The safety from Pearland, Texas (Pearland HS), graduated from SFA this past December in just three and a half years of study after becoming the school's first College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American® of the Year. The first Lumberjack to be tabbed a William V. Campbell Trophy® finalist, Walls was twice named Southland Conference Football Student-Athlete of the year following both the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Perriman, a native of Miami, Florida (Northwestern HS), maintained a 3.65 GPA as a criminal justice law enforcement major through the 2017 fall semester after suiting at the cornerback position for the 'Jacks the last two seasons. He started all 22 games throughout his two-year SFA career, compiling 91 total tackles and breaking up 21 total passes.
A 2018 NFL Draft prospect at defensive end, Franklin holds a 3.22 GPA as a kinesiology major and is a three-time All-Southland selection. The four-year letter winner from Greenville, Texas (Greenville HS), completed his Lumberjack career as SFA's fifth all-time career tackles for loss leader with 37.5, while finishing ninth in program history in all-time career sacks (17.5).
The trio represents three of 11 Southland football players to be named to the 2018 NFF Hampshire Honor Society as Houston Baptist has a league-high seven members and Nicholls one student-athlete.
Nominated by their respective schools, members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must have:
- Completed their final year of playing eligibility in 2017;
- Graduated players, who have remaining eligibility but will not return to collegiate play (e.g. declared for NFL Draft or retired from football), may also be nominated.
- Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and
- Met all NCAA- or NAIA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.
