Getting to know junior Jake Hendrix
A native of the Lone Star State's capital city, Hendrix has been playing his best collegiate golf as of late. The junior most recently had his best tournament of his Lumberjack career last week at the Lake Charles Invitational, where he shot a career-low 3-under 69 in the opening round of the event at the Country Club at the Golden Nugget. Hendrix completed the tournament by notching his second top-20 finish of his career, tallying a career-best even-par 216 to tie for 14th.
After transferring from New Mexico following his freshman redshirt year, Hendrix played in a total of four tournaments and completed 11 rounds of golf as a redshirt freshman and sophomore at SFA before stepping up into a much larger role this year. He has competed in five total tournaments in 2017-18 and played 15 rounds of golf, averaging a 74.40 per round for the third-best scoring average on the team.
Why did you choose to come and play at SFA?
"I transferred from the University of New Mexico at the end of my freshman year in order to play for a Division I program closer to my hometown of Austin. I also felt at home here at SFA and I knew I could be a key player for the golf program."
Who is the most influential person in your life, and why?
"The most influential person in my life is my little brother. He's always looked up to me as an example of what he should be like and I want to show him that he can do anything in life if he puts his mind too."
What are your top three to five values in life?
"My top values in life are hard work, dedication and drive. Without these it is a long road to success."
What is your best life lesson learned in college and/or golf?
"Whether I am on the golf course or off, patience and perseverance is something I always keep in mind. There will be rough times in life and sometimes you have bad holes on the course, by staying patient and persevering through the rough patches I can move on and excel."
What is your dream job that is not practical?
"My dream job would be to own a professional sports team. Owning an organization and watching your guys win a world championship would be a once in a lifetime experience."
Who would you play you in a movie/TV series?
"Joey from Friends would play me in a TV series because I feel like we have the exact same personality, and I love sandwiches."
What is your biggest fear? Is there a personal story about why?
"My biggest fear is four putting. Three putts can turn a good hole into a bad hole, but four putting can destroy your confidence."
What is one thing that no one knows about Steven?
"I am ambidextrous. I'm right-handed but play golf left-handed."
