‘Jacks compete in second tournament of 2018 and first in nearly a month, take on 18-team field in Laredo, Texas
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the first time in nearly a month and only the second time this calendar year, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team will be on the links for competition, this weekend at the Border Olympics hosted by the University of Houston. The Lumberjacks will take on the two-day, 54-hole tournament as one of 18 teams who will tee off at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, Friday and Saturday, March 9-10.
A total of 18 teams will converge on the par-72, 7,375-yard course over the weekend, including fellow Southland Conference teams Houston Baptist, Lamar, McNeese and Sam Houston State. Four of the teams competing at the event are currently ranked between No. 60 and No. 70 according to the latest Golfstat.com rankings with 60th-ranked Campbell University leading the way, followed by No. 61 Houston, 68th-ranked Arkansas State and No. 69 Sam Houston State.
Play will get underway Friday morning with a first round tee time of 8 a.m., followed by the second round at 1 p.m. Saturday's third and final round will also begin at 8 a.m. with all three rounds featuring a shotgun start.
With parings already set for the first and second rounds, SFA's quintet of senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas), juniors Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) and Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas), and freshmen Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) and Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) will play alongside golfers from Western Kentucky, New Mexico State and Louisiana-Lafayette through the first 18 holes. Stock will be teeing off from hole 8, while Hendrix will start from hole 9, both Leyvani and Lopez from hole 10, and Fabik off of hole 11. The 'Jacks will tee off from the same holes and are paired with the same teams for the second round Friday afternoon.
SFA is coming off of a strong showing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate last month in Palm Desert, California. The 'Jacks tied for 14th in a very competitive 23-team field, led by Stock's 2-over 218. Shooting at even par in the second round, SFA got a 3-under 69 by Leyvani and a 2-under 70 from Stok to help its cause before the 'Jacks notched a 5-over 293 in the third round to finish with a three-round score of 26-over 890. Stock tied for 38th among 135 total golfers as Fabik recorded a career-low 7-over 223 after shooting 1-over 73 in both the second and third rounds.
Through 15 rounds of golf in 2017-18, Leyvani owns a 74.40 stroke average in five total tournaments to lead SFA, while Lopez has averaged a 75.33 this season.
It will mark the 16th time the 'Jacks have competed at the Border Olympics, tying for seventh place among 19 teams in 2017, which tied SFA's best finish at the annual tournament. The 'Jacks also placed seventh out of 15 teams at both the 1996 and 1992 versions of the event. A year ago, the Border Olympics was played as a 36-hole tournament with SFA turning in a 2-under 574. Leyvani tied for 37th with a 1-over 145, while Stock tied for 81st with an 8-over 152.
Live scoring of the Border Olympics will be available at Golfstat.com.
