Fondren scores second goal of spring season in loss
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team played a tight game with the U-20 national team from Mexico on Tuesday night in College Station, ultimately falling by a 3-1 score. Despite the result, the Ladyjacks performed well on both sides of the ball, and grew with the level of competition faced.
Freshman Sophia Fondren continued her strong spring with her second goal in as many matches to tally SFA's lone strike, being assisted on the goal by fellow freshman Sabrina Segovia. On the attacking end, the Ladyjacks created several really dangerous scoring chances that demanded the best from Mexico's defense and keeper.
"What a great game to test our theory and validate where we are at as a team," said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "We didn't change anything from how we have trained and I am very encouraged with our play both offensively and defensively. Our fitness level is good and chemistry is really building. We certainly got better tonight and will use film against one of the top U-20 teams in the world to fine tune and tweak our tactics moving forward. A special thank you to Texas A&M for hosting us and to the Mexican U-20's for a great game. We wish them luck in the upcoming World Cup and know they will do great."
The 'Jacks will next play on April 7, with a road match in Ruston, Louisiana against Louisiana Tech.
