‘Jacks shoot a 17-over 301 in final round, finish with three-day total of 31-over 883
IRVING, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men's golf team wrapped up play at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge Wednesday afternoon at the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas Golf Course in Irving, Texas, shooting a 17-over 301 in the final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament co-hosted by the Lumberjacks. Posting a three-round total of 31-over 883, SFA finished sixth among the 16-team field after shooting a 7-over 291 on consecutive days in the first and second rounds of play.
North Texas captured the team title by totaling a three-day tally of 13-over 865, including shooting a 1-over 285 in the third round Wednesday, while Rice finished just three strokes behind the Mean Green with a 16-over 868. Illinois State took home third-place honors with a three-round total of 18-over 870.
The 'Jacks had two top-15 finishers in senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas), who led SFA with a seventh-place tie among 90 total golfers, and freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas), who earned a tie for 14th. Stock opened up the tournament by shooting a season-best and tournament-low 4-under 67, tied for the fourth-lowest single round score in school history, in the opening round Monday. He finished with a cumulative score of 4-over 217 after recording a 5-over 76 in the final round to secure his first top-10 placement of the season. Lopez earned his third top-15 finish of 2017-18 by shooting a 7-over 220 across the three days, including a 5-over 76 in Wednesday's final round.
Just like both Stock and Lopez, junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) also posted a 5-over 76 in the third round, giving him a three-round score of 10-over 223 and a tie for 27th place. For the second consecutive round, junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) shot a 1-over 73 and moved up four spots on the individual leaderboard to complete the tournament tied for 31st. Freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) turned in a final score of 17-over 230 to tie for 59th after registering a 6-over 77 on the final 18 holes of the par-71, 6,660-yard course.
Rice's Mario Carmona took home the individual crown after shooting 5-under 208, while David Rauer of Illinois State was the tournament's runner-up with a three-day total of 3-under 210. North Texas' Ian Snyman claimed third place with a three-round score of 2-under 211.
