
Men’s Golf Set to Co-Host ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge this Week

‘Jacks co-host 16-team tournament at the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas Golf Course in Irving, Texas, Monday-Wednesday, March 12-14
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the second time in less than a week, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team will be in tournament action, this week co-hosting the ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge with Oral Roberts in Irving, Texas, at the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas Golf Course. The Lumberjacks and the Golden Eagles will welcome 14 other teams to comprise the 16-team event held Monday-Wednesday, March 12-14.
A trio of fellow Southland Conference members will be competing at the tournament as Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas and Southeastern Louisiana join Cal State Fullerton, Illinois State, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Rice, Texas State, Utah State, Utah Valley and Western Illinois to make up the field of competition. Both Baylor and Oklahoma will also have individual competitors at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament will feature a single round on each day of play with teams teeing off of hole No. 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m. both Monday, March 12 and Tuesday, March 13. The third and final round of the event Wednesday, March 14 will feature an 8 a.m. double tee off of holes No. 1 and No. 10.
With round one tee times and pairings already set, SFA will begin play on the par-71, 6,791-yard golf course Monday at 11:50 a.m. The 'Jacks have been paired with players from Utah State and Central Arkansas as freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) will tee off at 11:50 a.m., followed by junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) at 12 p.m. Freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) will start at 12:10 p.m. Monday, while junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) will tee off at 12:20 p.m. and senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas) at 12:30 p.m.
In its third year of existence, the tournament has witnessed Long Beach State capture the 2016 team title with a three-round total of 15-over 867 and Arkansas State win the event in 2017 after shooting a three-day score of even-par 852. Oral Robert's Cody Burrows took home the individual title in the 2016 version of the tournament with a total score of 1-over 214, while Arkansas State's Zan Luka Stirn finished atop the individual leaderboard in 2017 with a three-round mark of 7-under 206.
SFA placed sixth among 24 total teams at its own tournament in 2017 and was paced by Stock, who shot a tournament-record 6-under 65 in the third round to finish tied for 10th. In 2016, the 'Jacks took home runner-up honors out of a field of 17 teams as then freshman Leyvani tied for second with a three-day total of 2-over 215.
At the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, this past Friday and Saturday, SFA tied for 13th out of 17 total teams after shooting its second-best two-round score of the season at 2-under 574. The 'Jacks tallied their second-lowest single round of the season in the second round of the event Friday with a 3-under 285.
SFA looks to bolster its resume this week with its seventh tournament of the season and third of the calendar year.
