Men’s Golf Wraps up Border Olympics Tied for 13th

‘Jacks turn in a final round score of 10-over 298 Saturday to finish with a three-round total of 8-over 872
LAREDO, Texas – After shooting its second-best two-round score of the season Friday at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team was unable to repeat its performance Saturday and registered a 10-over 298 in the third and final round. The Lumberjacks finished out the two-day, 54-hole tournament at the Laredo Country Club with a three-round score of 8-over 872 to tie for 13th among 17 total teams.
Entering the second day of play in sixth place with a two-round total of 2-under 574, SFA struggled on the par-72, 7,375-yard course. Campbell, who is ranked 60th nationally according to Golfstat.com, claimed the tournament title after posting an impressive two-day score of 21-under 843. Arkansas State, ranked 68th in the nation, earned runner-up honors with a 19-under 845, while 69th-ranked Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Monroe tied for third with a three-round total of 9-under 855.
Freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) and junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) tied for 44th in the 97-man event, both shooting three-round scores of 2-over 218. Leyvani recorded his second-consecutive round of 1-over 73 Saturday as Lopez shot a 3-over 75.
Freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas), after notching a career-low round of 2-under 70 in the second round Friday, tallied a 5-over 77 in the final round to finish tied for 61st with a 5-over 221. Junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) improved his second-round score by six strokes Saturday, shooting a 1-over 73 in the third round and tying for 70th with a two-day total of 7-over 223.
The 'Jacks were rounded out by senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas), who tied for 89th after shooting a 1-under 71 in round two Friday but registered an 11-over 83 in round three Saturday for a composite score of 14-over 230.
Western Kentucky's Billy Tom Sargent finished atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a three-round score of 12-under 204 with an impressive first and third round mark of 5-under 67. Campbell's Pontus Nyholm recorded two rounds of 6-under 72 to finish as the Border Olympics' runner-up with a total tally of 10-under 206. Houston's Michael Perras and UTSA's individual competitor Sean Meehan posted three-round scores of 8-under 208 to tie for third place.
