Murphy Earns Second Southland Men’s Athlete of the Week Accolade

SFA collects third weekly conference honor
Full Southland Conference Athlete of the Week Release
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin men's track and field athlete Drake Murphy has earned his second Southland Conference Athlete of the Week accolade, per a release from the conference office on Wednesday. Murphy, a junior, was also named the Men's Track Athlete of the Week on January 24th, along with SFA pole vaulter Antonio Ruiz.
Competing at the New Mexico Classic over the weekend, Murphy was the top collegiate finisher in the 600m race, finishing with a time of 1:20.06. He also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that finished second with a time of 3:13.17. That mark, while slower than the Southland-best mark of 3:12.30 that Murphy and the relay team set earlier this season at the Ted Nelson Invitational, is currently the third-best mark in the conference in that event.
Murphy and the rest of the Stephen F. Austin track and field team will be back in action this Friday at the Howie Ryan Invitational, the final tune-up meet before the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama on Feb. 21-22.
Ruiz was selected as an Honorable Mention in the voting for Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
