NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's golf team will return to the links for competition Sunday, Feb. 25, at the nation's largest collegiate golf tournament on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. The Ladyjacks take on an impressive 42-team field at the College of Charleston's 2018 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic held Sunday-Tuesday, Feb. 25-27 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Teams from all across the United States and various collegiate levels will converge for the three-day, 54-hole affair. The tournament uses two par-72 golf courses, Osprey Point and Oak Point, both located in the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. This is the fourth time in the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic's history the event has been hosted at Osprey Point at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Sunday's opening round of the tournament will take place on the 5,941-yard Oak Point course with two waves of shotgun starts. The morning wave will get underway at 7:30 a.m. CT with SFA teeing off during the afternoon wave, which is set for a 12 p.m. CT shotgun start. Monday's second round will be played on the 5,964-yard Osprey Point course. Featuring two waves of shotgun starts once again, the Ladyjacks will be a part of the morning wave and will tee off at 7:30 a.m. CT.
The third and final round of the event Tuesday will begin at 7:45 a.m. CT for all teams with a shotgun start. The top 22 teams in the standings after the first 36 holes of play will compete on the Osprey Point course for Tuesday's third round, while teams who stand 23rd-44th will take on the Oak Point course for the final round.
Redshirt junior Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) will tee off from hole No. 7 for the opening round Sunday as sophomore Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas) will tee off from hole No. 8. Redshirt junior Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas) and freshman Alexis Szewczyk will both begin on hole No. 9 and sophomore Paola Cortes (Allen, Texas) will start on hole No. 10. Most recently, the Ladyjacks finished 15th at the Texas State Invitational in Kyle, Texas, in their first tournament of 2018. SFA shot a two-day total of 90-over 942 across the three rounds at the event and are looking for much improvement at this weekend's tournament.

It was the lowest total score posted by a Ladyjack during the 2017-18 season and was just one stroke off Batista's career best of 7-over 220, shot at last year's Southland Conference Championship.

Getting to know freshman Alexis Szewczyk
A native of McKinney, Texas, Szewczyk came to Nacogdoches after a four-year letter winning career at McKinney Boyd High School, where she was an all-district selection as a junior and senior. Szewczyk placed in the top 10 individually at the 6A district tournament in 2016 and finished third as a senior in 2017. She captured the 2015 All-American Tour MentalApp Showdown at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club Dye Course with a two-round score of 149 and finished in the top three at a trio of different Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) events, including claiming second place at Cottonwood Creek and placing third at both Buffalo Creek and Onion Creek.
Since arriving at SFA, the freshman owns an 81.61 scoring average through 18 rounds and has competed in all six of the Ladyjacks' tournaments this season, including two as an individual. Szewczyk began her collegiate career by shooting a three-round score of 36-over 249 to place 34th at the ORU Lady Maxwell Invitational and tallied a personal-best 22-over 238 at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic in Hot Springs, Arkansas. At the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational Szewczyk earned her best finish, placing 31st with a three-round score of 25-over 238.
Why did you choose to come and play at SFA?
"From the beginning, I felt so welcomed by the team and coaches. As soon as I met everyone, I knew I would fit right in and would make great friends. The girls on the team made me feel like I was already a part of the team, which made my decision to come play here very easy."
Who is the most influential person in your life, and why?
"The most influential people in my life are my parents because my Dad is the hardest working and smartest person I know. I look up to him in everything I do, while my Mom is my forever best friend and always has my back no matter what. I am so thankful for them and wouldn't trade them for the world."
What are your top three to five values in life?
"Honesty. Perseverance. Kindness."
What is your best life lesson learned in college and/or golf?
"The best life lesson I've learned so far in college is to always be yourself and keep a positive attitude through everything. College is a learning experience and there will be some ups and downs, but staying positive and true to yourself is the best thing you can do."
What is your dream job that is not practical?
"My dream job would to be an FBI agent within the Behavioral Analysis Units (BAU)."
Who would play you in a movie/TV series?
"I think that Amy Poehler from Parks and Rec would play me because she's blonde and also has a fun personality. She is always smiling, laughing, and making jokes like me."
What is your biggest fear? Is there a story behind it?
"My biggest fear is wasps and bees, there isn't really a personal story behind it but the buzzing is the part that gets me!"
What is one thing that no one knows about Paola?
"I put ranch on everything, even fried rice."
