PALM DESERT, Calif. – After moving up the team standings Saturday by three spots, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team climbed another five spots Sunday to finish tied for 14th among 23 total teams at the ultra-competitive Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California. The Lumberjacks shot a 5-over 293 in the final round after shooting an even par 288 in the second round Saturday, bringing their three-day total to 26-over 890.
SFA placed ahead of teams such as Southern Illinois, Little Rock, Wichita State, Boise State, Southern Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, Cal State Fullerton and South Dakota State in the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas) led the 'Jacks by tying for 38th place among 135 total golfers, his best finish in any tournament in 2017-18. He shot a 4-over 76 Sunday after shooting rounds of par and 2-under 70 Friday and Saturday, totaling a three-round score of 2-over 218. Freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) had a strong showing on the par-72, 7,322-yard course, finishing tied for 64th after shooting a 1-over 73 for the second consecutive day and going 7-over 223 for the three days.
Junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) wasn't too far behind Fabik, registering a 3-over 75 in the final round after recording an impressive 3-under 69 in round two to own a three-day score of 8-over 224.
Both freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) and junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) continued to knock strokes off their scores as the rounds progressed. Lopez improved his second-round score of 4-over 76 by shooting a 2-over 74 in the third round, while Hendrix knocked eight strokes off of his day two tally with a 1-under 71 Sunday. For Hendrix, his day three score was the first round he shot under par this season. Rising seven spots on the individual leaderboard, Lopez finished tied for 107th with a three-day tally of 14-over 230. Playing in his first tournament of the season as a member of the scoring team and not as an individual competitor, Hendrix rose 16 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 112th with a three-round mark of 16-over 232.
A total of 35 golfers completed the three-day event with scores under par, led by Oklahoma State's Austin Eckroat who shot a 14-under 202 as an individual competitor. A member of the top-ranked team in the nation according to the latest Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Top-25 Coaches poll, Eckroat turned in an 8-under 64 in the third round to tie the single-round tournament record. It was the second 8-under 64 shot at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate over the weekend. Three other players tied Eckroat atop the leaderboard with identical scores, including California's Collin Morikawa and Sebastian Crampton and Texas Tech's Fredrik Nilehn.
California, ranked 15th nationally in the latest GCAA Coaches poll, took home the tournament title with a strong 47-under 817.
