Former Ladyjacks becomes eighth to sign pro contract
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Just months after ending her career as one of SFA's all-time greats and leaving an indelible mark on the program, midfielder Hanna Barker became the eighth former SFA player to sign a professional contract in the past five seasons. Barker, a native of Farmers Branch, Texas, inked a contract with FC Hafnarjordur of Hafnarjordur, Iceland.
Barker's signing follows in the footsteps of a handful of former Ladyjacks to sign professional contracts. Amanda Doyle was the most recent, signing with FC Alamein in Australia back in December. Aside from Barker and Doyle, Megan Dunnigan (Iceland), Brooke Dunnigan (Kazakhstan), Zuri Prince (Czech Republic), Chelsea Raymond (Iceland), Morgan Glick (Iceland) and Rachel Owens (Iceland) all played overseas at the conclusion of their SFA careers.
"I am very happy for Hanna and I can't wait to see what she does in Iceland. She has matured both as a player and a person over the last 4 years and it is a great feeling to watch that development occur. Hanna has enjoyed big moments and made memories I am sure will help her be successful at the next level. Along the way she has inspired the next group of Ladyjack soccer players coming through our program and no doubt they will be hungry to blaze a path similar to hers. It is so special to be a part of 8 players having had the chance to continue their playing careers overseas and it is something our program celebrates every chance that we get."
The 2017 Southland Conference Midfielder of the Year, Barker was one of the Southland's finest this season in leading SFA to a second place finish and an appearance in the 2017 Southland Tournament title game. Barker finished second in the league in goals (9), third in points (24) and fourth in assists (6), and was one of just two players in the conference to finish with more than eight goals to go along with five or more assists. For her career, Barker ranks fourth in career points (83), tied for fourth in goals (29) and second in assists (25).
In addition to being voted the league's top midfielder in the fall, Barker also received the honor last season, and was voted to the Southland All-Conference First Team twice and Second Team once. She broke onto the scene in the 2014 season and was promptly recognized as the SLC Freshman of the Year honoree. In addition, she was named to the NSCAA All-Region First Team as a junior, and the 2017 Academic All-Conference and United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Teams in her senior campaign. She appeared in 78 games for the Ladyjacks and started all but one game during her career at SFA, helping SFA to a 40-24-4 record during that span.
