Women’s Golf Wraps Up Play at Texas State Invitational

SFA places 15th with a three-round score of 90-over 942, Alexandra Batista turns in a top-15 finish with an 8-over 221
KYLE, Texas – Competing in its first tournament of 2018 and first since Oct. 31 of last year, the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team completed play at the Texas State Invitational Tuesday afternoon in Kyle, Texas, with a 15th-place finish after three rounds. The Ladyjacks shot 90-over 942 on the par-71, 6,059-yard Plum Creek Golf Course, tallying a score of 304 in the final round after shooting a 316 in the opening round Monday and a 322 in the second round earlier Tuesday.
Sophomore Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas), who stood tied for sixth through the first 18 holes of play, led SFA as she tied for 12th with a three-round score of 8-over 221. She began and ended the event with rounds of 2-over 73 and shot a 4-over 75 in the second round to earn her second top-15 finish of 2017-18 and sixth of her career.
Redshirt juniors Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas) and Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) tied for 71st and placed 77th, respectively. Lautensack ended the tournament with a 4-over 75 and finished with a two-day total of 25-over 238, while Jorgensen shot a 6-over 77 in the final round to claim a three-round score of 28-over 241.
Freshman Alexis Szewczyk (McKinney, Texas) improved her score each round and finished with 32-over 245 to tie for 81st. Rounding out SFA's golfers was sophomore Paola Cortes (Allen, Texas), who placed 87th in the individual standings with a tally of 38-over 251.
The 54-hole tournament was halted in the second round late Monday after evening darkness fell upon the course. Fellow Southland Conference member Central Arkansas captured the Texas State Invitational with a three-round score of 20-over 872 as UTSA, ranked 57th nationally 57th nationally according to Golfstat.com, took runner-up honors with a 29-over 881. Southland counterpart Houston Baptist finished third after shooting a 32-over 884 across the two days.
Central Arkansas' Emma Svensson won the individual title with an impressive 2-under 211 through the three rounds, which in included a 3-under 68 in the second round a 4-under 67 in round three. Her teammate, Geraldine Wong, shot a 1-under 212 to finish in second place, while Kaity Cummings of Houston Baptist was third with a two-day score of 1-over 214.
The Ladyjacks have nearly two weeks before returning to the links for competition. SFA women's golf is back in action Sunday-Tuesday, Feb. 25-27 in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic hosted by the College of Charleston.
