Rising junior collected two All-American honors at Blinn College in 2018
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Fresh off leading the SFA volleyball team to one of its best seasons in the history of the program, head coach Debbie Humphreys announced Wednesday the addition of Shelby Sheets to the team's roster for 2019. Sheets, a rising junior, inked her NLI for SFA Thursday morning.
Shelby Sheets | 5-10 | OH | Jr. | San Antonio, Texas | Antonian College Prepatory HS | Texas A&M-Kingsville | Blinn College
Following one-year stints at both Texas A&M-Kingsville (2017) and NJCAA power Blinn College (2018), Sheets has agreed to join the Ladyjacks for the final two seasons of her prep career. What the outside hitter brings to SFA's roster is an ability to produce offense that is unmatched by many at any level of collegiate volleyball.
Sheets' most recent collegiate action came at NJCAA Region 14 powerhouse Blinn where she put up some absurd numbers that included an NJCAA-leading 843 kills over 38 matches and a 6.34 kills per set average. Those offensive numbers helped the Buccaneers claim a conference title in 2018 and helped the squad rise to as high as 17th in the NJCAA national rankings.
For her efforts, Sheets claimed a pair of All-American citations following the conclusion of the 2018 season - one from the AVCA as a Two-Year College Second Team All-American and the other from the NJCAA as a Division I First Team All-American. The hard-hitting outside also earned the title of NJCAA Region XIV All-Conference Player of the Year in 2018 and was named the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Tachikara Offensive Player of the Week after amassing 119 terminations on the strength of a .280 attack percentage through the Buccaneers' fifth week of the season.
During her freshman season at NCAA Division II's Texas A&M-Kingsville, Sheets topped the team charts with a kills per set average of 2.86 en route to an All-Lone Star Conference Honorable Mention selection. Sheets totaled double-digits in kills eight time and pounded down a season-best 25 in a 3-1 victory over West Texas A&M on Nov. 4, 2017. Those 25 kills are tied for the fifth-most in a single match in program history.
As a prep at Antonian College Prepatory High School, Sheets was a standout player under the direction of Samantha McLune. Through her four-year career as a varsity starter, Sheets amassed 1,800 kills, 911 digs, 75 blocks and 73 aces. Due to those numbers, she broke her program's record for career kills in 2015 and went on to collect First Team All-District and First Team All-State selections in both 2015 and 2016. In all, Sheets racked up four All-District selections through her high school career and also accumulated four years of experience on the junior nationals scene as well as another six years of experience in club volleyball.
Humphreys on Sheets | "We are extremely excited to have Shelby join the SFA volleyball family. She brings a huge arm and a solid six rotation game to our program. She brings quality experience at the outside hitter position and is clearly comfortable taking lots of swings. We expect to see Shelby thrive in a more up-tempo offense."
