Harris puts in game-high 24, completes double-double effort with 10 rebounds
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - As dramatic as the SFA men's basketball team's win early in the week was, Friday night's victory was anything but.
Junior Kevon Harris led the way with a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double, senior Shannon Bogues added 16 points as well as a game and career-high nine assists and the 'Jacks started their lengthiest home stand of the season off on the right foot by blasting Arlington Baptist 97-47 Friday night inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
In all, six 'Jacks finished with 10 or more points in the blowout victory over the Patriots including Bogues, Harris, Mitchell Seraille (13), Nathan Bain (11), Davonte Fitzgerald (11) and Karl Nicholas (10).
FIRST HALF
• Right from the get-go, Harris made it a point to pile up the points as the junior nailed the first of his three first-half three-pointers on the home team's opening possession.
• As a matter of fact, Harris slung in a pair of long balls while Jock Hughes added another during SFA's 14-3 run that encompassed the first 4:54 of the non-conference tilt.
• Arlington Baptist crept back within nine points following a jumper by Jalin Holden with 14:54 left, but Nathan Bain answered with the first of his four first-half field goal makes seconds later. That make put the hosts up by double-digits for the remainder of the night.
• The home team's lead continued to balloon throughout the frame and Davonte Fitzgerald upped it to 21 by connecting on a layup that made matters 33-12 with 5:32 left in the half.
• SFA faced little resistance from Arlington Baptist's defense through the first 20 minutes of action as the 'Jacks shot 69-percent from the field (20-of-29) and 54.5-percent from three-point land (6-of-11) during the first stanza.
SECOND HALF
• Looking to end things as quickly as possible, the 'Jacks never let up through the final 20 minutes of play. After swapping scores with the Patriots early on in the frame, the 'Jacks went on a 13-2 run over a six-minute span in which they didn't allow Arlington Baptist to make a field goal.
• That surge was capped off by a put-back layup from Mitchell Seraille which pushed the hosts ahead 71-31 with 10:40 to go.
• Arlington Baptist put in buckets on back-to-back possessions and cut SFA's lead to 71-35 with 9:38 left, but Bogues took over from there. The senior scored or assisted on six of the 'Jacks' next eight field goal makes, helping SFA go on a 22-2 run that put the home team ahead 93-37 with 4:28 left.
• Oddyst Walker connected on a three-pointer with 2:42 to go that put the hosts up by a 96-39 margin. That 57-point edge proved to be SFA's largest of the game.
• The 'Jacks shot .618/.444/.333 through the final 20 minutes while limiting Arlington Baptist to a shooting split of .323/.500/.667 during that same span.
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Harris' double-double was his second of the season. The Ellenwood, Ga., product now has two fo the 'Jacks' three double-doubles in 2018-19 and is up to seven in his collegiate career.
• Additionally, five of the 'Jacks' 10 three-pointers came off the hands of Harris. Two more came from Bogues and that pair helped SFA finish the game with a 50-percent (10-of-20) accuracy rate from beyond the arc.
• Nicholas added a game-high three blocked shots in addition to his 10 points and two rebounds.
• Twenty-six of the 'Jacks' 41 field goal makes were assisted on and the specialty stats broke down the dominant win even further. SFA had its way with the Patriots in the painted area, outscoring Arlington Baptist 56-14 (+42) there.
• Transition buckets also helped the 'Jacks grab the upper hand early. SFA did not allow the Patriots to score a fast-break bucket while the hosts racked up 22 of their points on the break.
• SFA moved to 2-0 all-time against Arlington Baptist with each of those victories coming by 50 points.
