SFA completes early signing period with addition of Butler Community College sophomore quarterback Trae Self
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – New SFA football head coach Colby Carthel and the Lumberjack football program picked up its third signee of the early period Friday afternoon when quarterback Trae Self put ink to paper.
An incoming sophomore transfer from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, Self joins offensive linemen Caiden Walker and Zach Ingram, who both signed their national letters of intent Wednesday, in choosing to don the Purple and White. The trio are coach Carthel's first signees of the 2019 SFA class and will begin competing in Texas' oldest town next fall.
A native of North Richland Hills, Self spent two seasons in Kansas at Butler C.C. where he helped lead the Grizzlies to a 2018 Midwest Classic Bowl victory by throwing for 133 yards and a touchdown, in addition to rushing for 21 yards and a score. The gunslinger completed 129 passes for 1,774 yards and 15 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman this past fall, leading Butler C.C. to a 8-4 record on the season.
Before redshirting as a true freshman at Butler C.C. in 2017, Self lettered in both football and baseball at Richland High School. He was voted District 8-5A Offensive MVP as a senior in 2016 and claimed Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Class 5A All-State honorable mention acclaim. Self led the Rebels to their first playoff win in 32 years during his final varsity season, closing out his prep career with over 3,200 yards passing and 41 touchdowns. He also earned All-District 7-6A honors as a junior in 2015.
On the baseball diamond, Self played second baseman and pitcher, assisting Richland to a second-round playoff appearance his senior year in 2017 and garnering All-District 8-5A First Team accolades.
NCAA Division I football's early signing period ends Friday, Dec. 21 with eligible midyear junior college transfers able to sign through Tuesday, Jan. 15. National Signing Day 2019 will take place Wednesday, Feb. 6.
