Senior finishes with 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in 'Jacks' showdown with Warhawks
MONROE, La. - Senior Shannon Bogues put forth his first double-double effort in an SFA men's basketball uniform by finishing with a team-high 18 points as well as a game and career-best 12 rebounds, but Louisiana-Monroe's 23-5 run to start the game proved to be too large of a deficit to come back from as the 'Jacks fell 74-58 Saturday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Junior Kevon Harris added 17 points for the 'Jacks while graduate student Davonte Fitzgerald pumped in 16 during SFA's second-straight setback to a Louisiana-based institution.
FIRST HALF
• Coming out of the gates strong, the Warhawks started Saturday's non-conference showdown on a 23-5 run through the opening 7:59.
• Powering that initial surge by the hosts was Michael Ertel who netted 13 of his 16 first-half markers during Louisiana-Monroe's opening statement. Bogues put in the only two field goals for the 'Jacks in that span.
• Making matters worse for SFA was the fact that it could barely get any of its shots to go down. The 'Jacks started the game by going just 2-of-16 (.125) from the field which greatly aided the Warhawks.
• Louisiana-Monroe maintained a healthy cushion of 17 points after Jontray Harris drilled one of the squad's seven first-half long balls that made things 31-14 with 6:46 left in the frame. From there, however, the 'Jacks started to chip away at the Warhawks' lead.
• Bogues drilled a pull-up jumper and Davonte Fitzgerald found Kevon Harris for an easy layup before the graduate student splashed a contested three-pointer to cap a 7-0 run by SFA. That cut the Warhawks' edge to 10 points, 31-21, with 4:56.
• SFA, however, was unable to shrink the Warhawks' lead to less than 10 points in the frame.
• For the half, SFA put up a .273/.222/.700 shooting split while the Warhawks' split stood at .481/.412/.778.
SECOND HALF
• Hitting the comeback trail right from the first inbounds pass of the frame, the 'Jacks seized control of things early in the final half thanks to Harris.
• A three-point play by the junior kick-started an 11-3 SFA run that spanned the first 4:10 of the frame pulled the 'Jacks within five points. Fitzgerald finished the run with a turnaround jumper to make matters 43-38.
• The 'Jacks continued to punch, keeping their deficit at five when Bogues found Karl Nicholas for a tough driving score that made things 48-43 with 12:38 left. Bogues pulled SFA closer still by connecting on a three-pointer to trim the Warhawks' lead to 50-46 with 11:15 left, but Louisiana-Monroe responded with another run to put the game away.
• Daison Smith and JD Williams scored all of the Warhawks' points during a 13-3 run the pushed the home team ahead 63-49 with 7:37 left. Smith swished a pair of three-pointers during that run while Williams contributed one of his own.
• From there, the 'Jacks never got within 10 for the rest of the game.
• SFA shot considerable better in the second half, putting forth a .478/.364/.714 split. Louisiana-Monroe cooled off from the field, shooting only 32-percent (8-of-25) in the final 20 minutes but maintained their hot three-point touch by drilling 42.9-percent (6-of-14) of its downtown tries.
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Through the opening half, Bogues was able to reset his career high in rebounds by grabbing seven of the 'Jacks' 20 boards. He finished up his 12-rebound performance by grabbing five through the final 20 minutes of action.
