SFA bowling claims three traditional team match wins, adds 4,964 pins to earn No. 4 seed for Sunday’s bracket play
HOUSTON, Texas – The SFA bowling team will have a shot at its fourth team title in program history Sunday after earning its way to fourth place Saturday at Sam Houston State's Track Kat Klash in Houston. The sixth-ranked Ladyjacks picked up a trio of traditional match wins and added 4,964 pins to its pinfall total on the second day of competition inside the Emerald Lanes.
Sitting in fourth place among the 17-team tournament field with 9,645 total pins through 10 matches, SFA has earned the No. 4 seed for Sunday's bracket play, which will determine the 2018 Track Kat Klash champion.
The Ladyjacks claimed their first match victory of the day over fellow Southland Bowling League member and fifth-ranked Arkansas State 1,133-998 as sophomore Sarah Gill bowled a career-high game of 259 to lead SFA. Senior Paige Beeney chipped in a season-high game of 232 as fellow senior Dakotah Hazlewood posted a 226 and freshman Carlene Beyer a 224 in the Ladyjacks' win over the Red Wolves. The 1,133 pins represented the highest pinfall amount by any team during Saturday's traditional team matches.
The triumph over Arkansas State followed a close, 18-pin setback to third-ranked Nebraska in Saturday's opening match. Hazlewood led SFA against the Huskers with the first of back-to-back 226 games as Beeney added a 212 and sophomore Dakota Faichnie a 204.
After getting their first win of the day, the Ladyjacks rattled off two more victories with a narrow 945-938 defeat of league adversary Youngstown State and a 946-749 rout of Alabama A&M. Beeney and Gill each notched games of 200 against the Penguins with Beeney rolling a 213 and Gill a 206. SFA saw Beyer bowl a career-high game of 237 in its win over Alabama A&M, while Gill had her third-straight 200-pin game with a 210.
Despite junior Megan Eaglehouse stepping in and recording a game of 203 and Beyer adding a 195, the Ladyjacks were nipped 967-914 by No. 2 McKendree University in the fifth and final match of the afternoon.
Gill knocked down 1,023 total pins Saturday and posted a 204.6 game average in five traditional team games to finish in eighth place among 125 total bowlers, while Beyer finished ninth with a 203.4 average and 1,017 total pins. Hazlewood placed 14th after averaging a 198.4 Saturday and holding a pinfall total of 992 as Beeney was 16th with a 198.2 average and 991 total pins.
Nebraska's Meghan Straub accumulated 1,133 total pins Saturday, averaging a game score of 226.6 as the tournament's top bowler. Caitlin Cunningham of UAB earned runner-up honors after totaling 1,085 pins and averaging a 217 as Monmouth's Haley Solberg placed third with a 214 game average and a pinfall total of 1,070.
Third-ranked Nebraska is the top seed for Sunday's bracket play and leads the tournament field with an 8-2 record 9,883 pins. Seventh-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore is seeded second with a pinfall total of 9,841 and a 5-4 record, while No. 2 McKendree is the third seed with 9,790 total pins and a 6-3 mark.
Three rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches will conclude the Track Kat Klash Sunday and determine a tournament champion with round one getting underway at 8:30 a.m. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play is based on teams' pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's Baker and team matches.
SFA will face third-seeded McKendree in the opening round of bracket play. Should the Ladyjacks claim a first-round win, SFA would then take on the loser of top-seeded Nebraska and second-seeded Maryland-Eastern Shore for a spot in the title match.
