NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin junior place-kicker Storm Ruiz has been placed on the 2018 Fred Mitchell Award Watch List for the month of September after his performance in the first five weeks of the college football season. He is one of just seven FCS place-kickers to appear on the 21-man list and is one of only two representatives from a Texas school.
The Fred Mitchell Award recognizes place-kickers at the FCS, NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA levels for their excellence on the football field for the 2018 season and for continued community service during their offseason.
A 2017 Fred Mitchell Award finalist, Ruiz knocked through four of his five field goal attempts in the month of September, while going a perfect 4-for-4 on point-after tries. He owns a perfect 1-for-1 mark on field goals beyond 40 yards this season with his fourth-quarter 41-yarder getting the Lumberjacks within seven points with about six minutes to go at 11th-ranked McNeese. Ruiz has also made field goals from 36, 33 and 20-yards out, including a pair of 30-yarders at Southeastern Conference stalwart and Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) 18th-ranked Mississippi State to open up the 2018 season. Leading SFA in scoring, Ruiz' .800 field-goal percentage leads the Southland Conference and is tied for 24th-best nationally. His one field goal per game average for the month was fifth-highest in the league and was tied for 41st among all FCS place-kickers.
Off the field, Ruiz is involved with several community outreach projects in Nacogdoches, including SFA's "Read to Succeed" program where Lumberjack football players devote part of their Friday mornings to reading to elementary school children at the SFA Charter School. Additionally, Ruiz volunteers his time with other Lumberjack football players on Thursday mornings in helping greet and walk Raguet Elementary School students to class. During the spring, Ruiz participates in SFA's The Big Event, which is a campus-wide community service initiative where students go out into the Nacogdoches community to make an impact by helping those in need with various projects.
The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be announced in mid-December based on performance on the football field and in the community. Complete details are provided at FredMitchellAward.com.
